  • Asked by Anna from Gainesville, Georgia

    Q
Does Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II kill spider mites on conifers?
I found it last year at Lowes and Home Depot. Bayer 3 - 1 grandular and it worked great. Now all that I have been able to find is the liquid version that lasts 1 month. Help.
    A
Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed - Granules is a systemic insecticide but it does not work well for spider mites. For spider mites a topical foliage spray such as Talstar P would be a better choice but it will need to be reapplied 1 time per month through the season.

  • Asked by Ken from Colleyville, Tx

    Q
I need to treat 15 Cedars for bag worms with systemic insecticide. How many 4lb containers of this do I need?
    A
The Bayer Advanced product would not work for your needs both because it is not labeled to treat bagworms, but also because bagworms are not affected by systemic insecticides in either a liquid or granular form. You must spray the foliage and trunks of the trees, no matter how tall they are to effectively control the bagworms. With the way bagworms feed they do not get far enough into the trees system where the systemic product would be for it to affect them, and even if they did it takes at least 3 weeks for a systemic product to work its way all the way through the tree to where they are feeding. We highly recommend using a foliar spray like Fertilome Borer, Bagworm and Tent Caterpillar spray as this works extremely well at coating the leaf surfaces and providing faster ingestion. You would mix this product at the rate of 2 ounces per gallon of water and spray both top and bottom sides of plant foliage until wet but not dripping. You can make multiple applications a year as needed. Depending on the heigth of your trees will depend on how many bottles of the product you will need. If you do not have a sprayer that will reach heights of more than 15 feet, we do carry Backpack Sprayers and our Chapin Slide Pump Sprayers which will reach roughly 20-30 feet at least depending on the pressure used.

  • Asked by Gene from Prescott, Az

    Q
Will Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub kill pine borers?
The prior owner of my property brought home firewood infested with pine borers. Now all my pines are dying. How can I save them?
    A

Unfortunately, there is no easy solution when it comes to pine beetles and Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II would not be recommended for them. Infected trees should be cut down (before the newly hatched beetles fly out of the trees in the spring/summer) and the wood burned or chipped, while other still healthy trees should be sprayed annually to protect them. Because of the natural boring behavior of the beetle they are protected from topically applied insecticides and systemic insecticides (those injected into the tree or applied as a root drench) have proven ineffective for pine beetle infestations. Healthy trees can be protected before the beetles attack by topically spraying them with a product called Permethrin SFR. The tree should be sprayed from the ground to 15 ft up the trunk to prevent future infestations.
