    Q
Is Bora-Care compatible with ice & water shield materials?
I plan to use Bora-Care to resolve wood rot problems adjacent to roof materials which include an ice & water shield which adheres to the roof but would also be exposed in some areas to the bora care treatment
    A

Apply Bora-Care solutions only to bare wood, plywood, particleboard and other cellulosic materials where an intact water-repellent barrier, such as paint, stain or sealer, is not present.  It should not harm other materials though we would recommend you contact Nisus, the manufacturer at 800-264-0870 to confirm.

    Q
If Boracare is a repellant, why would they eat it?
Would they not just move on to untreated wood? I would also like to know if I can pour Termidor around the base of a tree that has termites in dead branches.
    A

Bora-Care is not repellent, it is a wood preservative that insects ingest while feeding on treated wood.  It is used to protect wood from infestations or treat active infestations.  Termidor cannot be used to treat soil around a tree it can only be used adjacent to a structure.

Termites do not attack live, healthy trees. If the tree has been damaged by termites it would be advisable to remove the tree and perform a liquid termite soil treatment around the home with Termidor SC to ensure subterranean termites to not find a food source inside of your home. Please take a few minutes to read our article How to Perform a Termite Treatment which will explain how to do the treatment in laymens terms and also explain any needed equipment. Most folks find that they only need a 5 gallon bucket and perhaps a drill in some situations. You should follow the Termidor product label and you should mix Termidor with water as specified.

    Q
Can I apply Boracare with a fogger?
    A

Boracare is too thick of a product to be used in any type of fogger.  It can be foamed into wall voids or sprayed or painted directly onto raw untreated wood.

    Q
Is there a dry spray for killing wood eating beetles?
We think we have beetles in our attic space. It is a narrow space and will have to reach up through ceiling to spray. We don`t want to add moisture to the area so would need a dryer type of spray.
    A

We are not aware of any such product.  For active wood boring beetles we typically recommend Boracare.

  • Asked by Chris from Foley, Alabama

    Q
Can Bora-Care be used as a stand alone pretreatment for termites in Alabama?
Is a liquid perimeter required as well as the boracare application?
    A

While you can do the Bora-Care on the bottom 2 feet of the studs and sill plates as the walls are built, you should do a perimeter treatment as you mentioned for Subterranean termites. Since Alabama is prone to both Subterranean and Drywood termites, we would recommend trenching around the perimeter with a product like Taurus SC. You may view our Subterranean Termite Treatment Guide for more information about trenching.

    Q
    Can I apply Bora-Care myself?
We are an over 55 community located in Southern Florida can my maintenance staff legally apply boracare at our condominium? We have 418 units. I see the product in gallon containers can it be purchased in volume such as 55 gallon drums?
    A

We apologize but would recommend you contact the local department that handles pesticide regulations to confirm any restrictions with the maintenance staff applying the Bora-Care.  This is usually your department of agriculture.  You are able to apply on your own home yourself, though.  The product is only available in the gallon size jug.

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care as a chemical spray to treat stud walls?
I built a small storage building and need a spray to treat the stud walls for bugs and rats, do you have this?
    A

For wood-boring insects you can use Bora-Care to treat the studs. Bora-care does not treat for rodents or for surface pests like roaches, spiders, etc. If sheetrock will be added, you can use Cimexa Dust to leave in the wall voids for other insects, using a duster like the Bellow Hand Duster. For rat control, you can use one of our rat control kits like the Protecta LP Rat Bait Stations with Fastrac Blox to place around on the outside of the structure and seal off any possible entry points.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be sprayed in an airless 900 sq attic?
If I spray bora care 1:1 ratio in about 900 sq airless attic, will it create problems like mold, mildew, fungus? The attic is 3 feet high and has 4 vents of about 4" x 16" with 2 at each sides at attic floor. If there are dust on the studs &joists, by how much the bora care absorption is reduced? Even if it is reduced, would spraying be better than nothing? Thank you very much.
    A

Bora-Care can be sprayed in a non-ventilated area but we do recommend wearing a respirator mask in that case.If there is a humidity issue already, we recommend fixing that problem first with a Dehumidifier if the situation calls for one. If there is a risk of mold, you can treat first with Bora-Care, at a 1:1 ratio, and after at least 48 hours you can treat with Bora-Care with Mold-Care, at a 5:1 ratio, to treat or prevent mold.

    Q
Before install, I treated 3/4 plywood subfloor on bottom side with Bora-Care
Now that plywood is installed on treated joists, Is it necessary to treat top side as well?
    A

Bora-Care will only penetrate through the wood that it is applied to.  So if you have other wood placed on top of already treated wood you would need to treat that as well.

    Q
Will it work on carpenter bees
    A
Bora-care is more food wood destroying pests that ingest the wood rather than just tear at it like carpenter bees do. While some carpenter bees may die from ingesting some of the Boracare particles if its already been applied to raw wood they are drilling into, it would not be considered the best option for them. You can review our Carpenter Bee Control Guide to see the best tips and products used for eliminating and preventing carpenter bees throughout the season.

    Q
I have a slab of soft wood. I need to treat (has bugs) how long until I can handle after using Bora-Care? Make cuts, plane, sand etc.
    A

When using Bora-care for raw wood applications, you can handle the wood for cutting and turning it into whatever you intend it to be once the wood has dried. This can often take anywhere from just a few hours, to a couple of days, based on how heavy you applied it, and how thick the wood was to provide time for full absorption.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be used on driftwood?
I have a bunch of pieces of driftwood in various sizes (size of my palm up to my husband lugging it back from the beach). Can I use Bora-Care to treat it all? I was thinking of making up a bucket of the mixture and dipping the pieces that I can fit, into it. I am planning to dip the ends of the larger pieces and spraying the parts I can't dip. Is this the best way to go about treating the driftwood?
    A

Yes, you can use Boracare to treat for insects on the wood once it has dried. You can spray, paint, roll, or spray the product onto the wood.  It will penetrate about an inch into each side of the wood make sure you are treating all 4 sides.

    Q
Will Bora-Care kill peach tree borers and shot hole borers?
    A

Bora-Care is not labeled for use to target borers on plants or trees, and it only intended to be used on cellulosic materials including wood, plywood, particle board, paper, oriented strand board (OSB), cardboard, and wood composite structural components.  You may consider using Tenguard SFR Termiticide which is labeled for use on on fruit and nut trees around residential sites to target Peachtree Borers, but we would recommend reaching out to your local cooperative extension office for recommendations on products to target Shot Hole Borers.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be used on logs with bark still on?
I need to spray Bora-Care on the sleepers in my 1870 barn. Most of the beams still have their bark on. Moisture content is quite low on most. Will the Bora-Care penetrate through the bark and into the wood? As well most of the sleepers are larger than 8-10
    A

Bora-Care will not penetrate through logs that still have bark on them. The bark will need to be removed from each log for an effective application. If the sleepers are 8-10" in diameter, this will require 2 full applications. The second application will need to be applied once the first application has dried.

    Q
Will Bore-Care go through wood down to the joists?
I have no sub-floor. I have over 100 year-old 1-inch thick pine floorboards installed directly onto joists. If I sand the floors and apply Bora-Care to them, would Bora-Care effectively penetrate into the joists to protect them as well? Is there anything I can do to make penetration more effective?
    A

Since you are wanting the joists to be treated as well, we recommend spraying the Boracare directly onto them as it will not soak through the floorboards into the joists. Boracare may take time to get throughthe floorboards since the wood is very old and would not have much moisture remaining in them. The best way to be sure the Boracare penetrates correctly would be to treat on all sides and get a full coverage spray.
