    Q
Is it safe to sand wood after it has been treated with Bora-Care?
Can I use wood treated with this product to build things after it has dried? Does sanding it release anything that is harmful to humans or pets?
    A

Yes, after the Bora-Care has dried, you can sand and finish the wood. It usually takes 24-48 hours to fully dry. Nothing harmful is released into the air in doing so.

    Q
What is the difference between Boracare and Boracare Commercial?
There are 2 different labels that have been found and I am a little confused.
    A

There is only one available now, the regular Bora-Care. Per the manufacturer, Bora-Care commercial was for a special legal circumstance only in Florida with respect to labeling. It has been discontinued, and is the same product as regular Bora-Care.

    Q
Can Boracare be used in a cabinet that is used for food storage?
I'm sure you would have to remove the food when applying, but can you safely store food in an area that has been treated? If so, how long do you have to wait after treatment?
    A

You would indeed remove all food products from the cabinet. You would need to apply the Boracare to the raw wood, let it dry for at least 48 hours and then seal the wood with stain, paint, etc. After that has been completed you can put food products back in the cabinet.

  • Asked by Tim from Perris

    Q
I have termites in my mulberry trees. Will Bora care work to treat the termite infestation?
    A

Bora-Care cannot be used on trees or plants.  It is for cut lumber only.  Borates will kill any living plant, shrub, grass or tree.  Termites do not attack live, healthy trees.  If you have termites in a tree you would need to treat the nest directly by drilling holes into the dead parts of the tree where the colony is infesting.  This can be done with something like Dominion 2L or a foam like Termidor Foam.

    Q
Does Boracare leave a shiny/glossy kind of residue?
I used Boracare underneath my foyer. Mixed 1:1 of water:Boracare with drill for 5 to 10 minutes in warm to hot water. Used right away. Some spots have a shiny or glossy look to the wood and I just want to make sure this is normal and it seeped into the wood.
    A

Boracare should not leave any kind of visible residue once it has dried.  If you are seeing spots that look shiny, this is usually because these areas have not yet fully dried.  In most cases, it takes 24-48 hours for a Boracare application to dry thoroughly.

    Q
Will the Boracare that I used previously take care of the powderpost beetles in my barn now?
I previously applied one of your products approx. 1 yr ago and some beetles are still present. I don't remember the product name at this time. Where do I go from here? I have powderpost beetles in my barn. What product should i use.
    A

It was Boracare that you purchased before, and provided that you used that correctly when applying and sealed it within 90 days of applications it will take care of the powderpost beetles that are present now. They have to feed on the wood in order to ingest the Boracare at this time to kill them.

    Q
Can I mix Bora-Care with Termidor SC for a single application, if not, how would you apply for an infestation?
    A

No, you would not mix Bora-Care with Termidor SC for a single application.  Bora-Care is a wood treatment product that is great for drywood termites.  Termidor SC  is made to adhere to soil and is poured in a 6-inch deep trench that is dug around the foundation of the home.  So depending on which type of termite you have will determine which product would be best for you.

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care on my wood furniture?
I have powder post beetles on my wood table. I believe I bought these tables from a reputable furniture store, and I don't know what to do. They are nice tables. Will this solution ruin the tables, or can I apply it to them? I have to do something because this is crazy to have bugs in a table I paid good money for? What do you suggest?
    A
In order to use Bora-Care on your table, you would have to make sure the wood is bare or stripped. Bora-Care cannot penetrate into sealed or finished wood. After wood has been treated with Bora-Care, you can paint, stain or seal the wood with no problems.

    Q
A gallon of Boracare will cover how much wood surface?
    A
One gallon of Bora-Care will treat approximately 100 lineal feet of 2 x 4 stud wall. This includes sill plate and header. For other dimensional lumber, logs, or siding and plywood, please see the product label or the supplemental tech bulletin. Typically, one gallon of concentrate Bora-Care will treat 800 square feet of a 2x4 stud wall, and 500 square feet of a crawl space or attic.

  • Asked by Clay from Seattle, Wa

    Q
Does the second coat of Boracare have to be applied within a certain time?
Does a 2nd coat of BoraCare have to be applied (painted or sprayed) before the first coat dries? I'm concerned the 2nd coat might not penetrate adequately if the 1st coat is totally dry because I wasn't able to do the 2nd coat for several days or longer.
    A

Per Boracare's label you need to allow the first application to dry by waiting at least 20 minutes in between applications. For some applications, like when treating for Subterranean or Formosan termites, you may need to wait at least an hour between applications.

    Q
How many years will I need to reapply Boracare if I don't do surface finish after treated deck?
I applied boracare on my old deck without surface finish about 4 years ago. I want to know how many years I will do it again.
    A
Without treating the surface with a sealant, paint or stain after applying Boracare, the product will evaporate out the surface within a couple months. We would recommend doing a complete reapplication of your decking with Boracare and followed by a surface finish. It is important to seal your treatment of Boracare within 1 month with a sealant, paint, or stain to ensure the Boracare is locked into the wood. You will need to reapply the sealant or paint per the product label you choose.

  • Asked by Dave from San Jose, Ca

    Q
Do I need a respirator and safety glasses while spraying BoraCare?
Is Boracare harmful to humans if inhaled? Does Boracare produce toxic if fumes if inhaled? Will direct contact with Boracare damage eyes?
    A
BoraCare is relatively safe product to use as long as the Product Label is followed. The active ingredient in Boracare is an inorganic salt. The BoraCare product label recommends that users wear goggles, gloves, long sleeve shirts, long pants, shocks, and shoes. If you will be performing the appliction in an area that is NOT well ventilated such as an attaic or crawlspace then a respirator mask would be recommended. As for the effects of the odor/fumes or eye contact, we would recommend you contact Nisus, the manufacturer at 800-264-0870.

    Q
    Boracare for powder post beetles
I have a piece of furniture invested with powder post beetles. I bought a termitocide foam and it worked some but I cannot reach all the holes. The outside of the furniture is stained/painted to the reclaimed look but the inside is not. It's a small cabinet maybe 3 ft tall and 3 feet wide. The wood isn't very thick. Can I apply boracare on the inside and it be effective for the entire piece. I don't want to part with it but am becoming extremely frustrated. Thanks AC
    A
Yes the Boracare will absorb all the way into the wood and eliminate any infestation that is there and last for the life of the wood.  Boracare is the only insecticide that can penetrate into the wood to kill the immature beetles before they chew their way out of the wood and damage the furniture.

    Q
What is the correct ratio of BORACARE to treat a newly framed garage?
I am building a detached 18X20 garage. I have it dried in (roof and walls are sheathed) All studs and rafters are exposed on inside. I used a hand sprayer (1 Gallon) with a 1:1 ratio. THe label says to use ratio of 1:1. I have been told to use 5:1. Can you please inform me officially what ratio to use on this 2nd coat? THanks. I do have the blue tablets. Made it so nice to see what was sprayed and what wasn't.
    A
We ALWAYS recommend using a 1:1 ratio  with Boracare because of 2 reasons.  First of all, a 1:1 ratio is the strongest ratio and will ensure complete penetration through the wood and it will protect longer in the wood than any other ratio.  Second, even though you are using new wood, or store bought raw wood, it can still contain beetles and other insects from the mill.  Applying a 1:1 ratio ensures that if there are any issues whatsoever, they are taken care of before they become a problem.

    Q
Should we spray the new plywood with Timbor or Boracare?
We have a 40-year-old home with redwood plywood siding. The siding has worn & we are about to cover it with a new layer. Redwood isn't available; we'll use 11/32 " Breckenridge siding plywood, over builder's paper. Trim is heart redwood & will be replaced as needed. We plan to use a transparent stain, to "even out" old & new wood color. We've had many drywood termite attacks; entry has been through beam ends & trim. Professional Tim-bor treatment has controlled them. Should we spray the new plywood with Timbor or Boracare? Before or after staining?
    A
Anytime you are treating exterior wood you should always use Bora-Care.  It will last longer in the wood than Timbor.  Also, when treating new wood with timbor it can leave a powdery residue because it is a powder.  Bora-Care dries clear and will look better after finishing the wood with the stain.  Since you have a rare opportunity to treat your new siding you should treat with the best, and Bora-care is the best.  When treating plywood that is close to 3/4" thick, you should apply at a rate of one gallon of Bora-Care to one gallon of water.  This will make two finished gallons.  These two finished gallons should treat 1066 square feet of siding.  Once you have applied the Bora-Care you should wait at least 48 hours for it to dry before applying any type of stain or sealant.
