Details

Ferti-lome Brush Killer Stump Killer is recommended for the control of unwanted woody plants, vines and broadleaf weeds around homes, cabins, fences, walkways, and other non-crop areas.

Stump Treatment

To kill Stumps and prevent sprouting, apply the undiluted product with a paint brush or backpack sprayer to completely cover the freshly cut surface. Do not reuse paint brush. Wrap in several layers of newspaper and discard in trash.

Vine Control

When treating Vines such as Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, etc. that grow on or around desirable Plants, do not allow spray to contact desirable vegetation. Cut the Vine first and treat as directed for Stump treatment.

Foliage Spray

Using a hose-end or tank sprayer, mix 8 to 16 tablespoons (4 to 8 fl. oz.) in enough water to make one gallon mixed spray. For mature or hard-to-control Plants (such as Ash, Blackgum, Choke Cherry, Elm, Maple, Oak, Pine, or Winged Elm), or during drough conditions, use the highest rate of application indicated. Resprouting may occur in the year following treatment when lower rates are used. The addition of a surfactant (spreader/sticker) enhances herbicidal action and improved distribution of the spray on hard-to-wet Plant surfaces. Apply at the rate of one gallon mixed spray to approximately 500 sq. ft. of area. Coverage may vary depending on the amount of foliage to be treated. Using coarse spray pattern and low pressure, apply as thorough foliage spray to wet all leaves.

    Stunp Killer

    By Jk on 11/23/2012

    Verified Purchase

I have used this product in the past and it works excellent for killing stumps. I cut down several eucalyptus trees and kept getting new growth on the stumps, after I applied this product there was no more new growth.

    KILLS BAMBOO

    By Anonymous on 06/19/2013

I planted bamboo the neighbor complained. The town passed an ordinance REMOVE IT OR BE FINED. It was a beautiful screen that took 5 years to grow to 40ft. I was told about this product from Amber a sales rep on this site. I bought a case. Each stalk must be chopped at ground level with a saw-zall and the product must be injected in within 7 seconds with a large syringe. Excellent Result. You have to keep after it the first season & after every rain. IT REALLY WORKS. I am down to 1 or 2 tiny weak shoots after it rains. Follow these directions. Right after the BAMBOO is chopped it withdraws its fluid to the root When you replace the fluid with the stump killer the root dies. ALSO it has not leached to other plants in the yard. My daylilies are blooming fine. I would start with 2 cases as I am now on my 2nd. I will always want a bottle around because BAMBOO is a challenge. IT IS A BATTLE YOU CAN WIN!

    Works Great!

    By Angela on 04/01/2016

We bought an old house that had been neglected. It had an 80 foot chain link fence completely filled with 7 ft tall trees and hundreds of saplings. We cut them all off and applied the Fertilome Brush Killer to each fresh stump as we went along and we killed every single one of those suckers!

    Great Product

    By Gloria on 10/02/2012

I live in The Florida Keys and many of us have gravel instead of grass for our yards. There are these annoying strangler vines that pop up in the gravel and are nearly impossible to get rid of......until now. I tried ALL the chemicals fro Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Kmart and our local hardwares.....none touch them. This product really works. It seemed to take longer than I expected but 3 weeks later they are GONE.......and I mean GONE!!! I'll re order soon so I have it on hand incase I missed some.

    Buckthorn buster

    By J on 11/28/2013

In my experience, this is the only product I have tried that is effective against buckthorn. Round-Up just lets it come back, mutated and angry. Unfortunately, UPS damaged the product, causing a delivery delay, but the product is good.

Q
How many of Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer do I need to use on a stump?

The previous answer was totally wrong. It strung together two unrelated parts of the instructions. Instruction for killing plants: takes 1 to 6 weeks for plant to die Instruction for killing stump: Paint once? Do not tell us that the stump will disintegrate in 1 to 6 weeks -- that is wrong. The root system may be poisoned in 1 to 6 weeks, but the stump will not look any different in one month or two months or even three.

A
It will take 1-6 weeks to kill the root system. You will still have to do your part by removing the stump. Fertilome Brush and Stump Killer will kill the root system and make the stump stop sprouting but it does not make the stump disappear. The exact wording on the product label is "To kill Stumps and prevent sprouting, apply the undiluted product with a paint brush or backpack sprayer to completely cover the freshly cut surface. Do not reuse paint brush. Wrap in several layers of newspaper and discard in trash."

Q
How soon after using Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer on a stump can I replant a tree?
A
According to the manufacturer if you used Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer as directed on the product label, and you did not get any product on the soil, you can replant right away. Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer does persist in the soil so if you did treat the soil the manufacturer recommends that you wait 6-8 months before you replant anything in the area.

Q
What can I use to kill Crepe Myrtle shoots after tree removal?

Had a couple of large crepe myrtles removed. Now I am getting constant shoots coming up from the roots. I apply your post-emergent Atrazine High Yield formula to avoid harming my centipede grass. It will do an initial kill, but then they come right back. Have been doing it for 2 years now. Thought by now the tree would die from lack of light access. Wonder if Triclopyr for woody weeds would work better? Don't want to knock out the centipede though.

A

If you have shoots coming out directly from the stump or roots, you can cut the shoot and apply Ferti-lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer directly to the fresh cut,  It’s not labeled to harm your grass but we do not recommend making direct applications. Apply it undiluted to the freshly cut stumps/roots and then use it at either full strength or the highest dilution on any shoots that are coming up around the main stump. This will penetrate further into the root system to kill it out. You may have to cut back new shoots from time to time in the beginning as the Crossbow and Stump Killer products will only kill what has already emerged from the ground, not prevent the new seedlings still below the surface from sprouting up. Over time the stump and root system should die out and eventually break down in the soil.

Q
Do you use this product full strength or dilute it?
A
According to the Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer product label "To kill Stumps and prevent sprouting, apply the undiluted product with a paint brush or backpack sprayer to completely cover the freshly cut surface." For your convenience we have linked the product label in this answer but all product labels are always available on individual product pages on our website.
