    Q
Will Grass Out Max kill grass without harming my moss lawn?
I am cultivating a moss lawn at my mountain cabin using multiple verities of local moss transplanted from the surrounding woods. I have an infestation of wild grasses that I need to get rid of. Is this product safe to use on my moss lawn to kill the grasses? Should I use a surfactant ?
    A

Grass Out Max (Clethodim Herbicide) would injure the moss. We would recommend using Ferti-lome Over the Top II Weed Killer to kill grassy weeds in and around moss. The product label lists different varieties of moss that are tolerant, please view the product label HERE.

    Q
I planted a clover and chicory plot, how long should I wait before I apply the Grass Out Max and surfactant?
I tilled where grass use to be and planted clover and chicory. Do I have to wait for the clover and chicory to start to come up or apply it before it comes up?
    A

Since the product label does not indicate a time frame on when Grass Out Max (Clethodim Herbicide) can be applied to newly planted clover, we would recommend contacting the manufacturer directly for confirmation. Agrisel can be reached at (770) 831-4160.

    Q
Will Grass Out Max (Clethodim Herbicide) kill St. Augustine grass? I did not see it listed on the product label.
    A

Grass Out Max in theory would likely harm St Augustine grass since it targets similar grasses such as bermuda. However if the herbicide is not listing it as a control plant, then we couldn't say that it would actually be effective.

    Q
Will Grass Out Max kill bermudagrass without killing/injuring Pink Muhly, Breezegrass, Lantana, Liriope and butterfly bush?
    A

Grass Out Max (Clethodim Herbicide) is labeled to kill bermudagrass and safe to be used around liriope and lantana. It lists wirestem muhly as tolerant but not pink muhly, breeze grass or butterfly bush.

We would recommend contacting the Master Gardener with the Cooperative Extension office for recommendations for treating around those ornamentals.

Another option will be to spot treat with a non selective such as RoundUp QuickPro carefully spring the weed directly. This will not leach into the soil near desirable plants if applied carefully.

    Q
I treated weeds around my bamboo with Grass Out Max based off the information I received from another Q&A stating that Grass Out Max would not injure bamboo or be effective to eradicate it. Unfortunately, the staff member was incorrect and therefore I sprayed the weeds around my bamboo which killed my new/young bamboo shoots which is exactly what I DID NOT want.
    A

We do apologize if any misinformation you may have read in past Q&A’s by one of our staff regarding the use of Grass Out Max around bamboo. Due to labeling changes, revisions, updates, etc by manufacturers, it is always recommended that customers review the full product label prior to treating and observing all restrictions, limitations and directions per the product label being they are the end user and applying the pestiicide.

For Ornamentals (page 62) The product label provides a full list of the plants tested for use with Grass Out Max and does advise the following precaution “Due to variability within species, crop growth stage, environmental conditions, and application techniques, it is advised that the user determine if herbicide can be used safely on a few plants prior to widespread application. Neither the seller nor the manufacturer of AGRISEL GRASSOUT MAX HERBICIDE have investigated the safety factor to ornamental plants not listed on the label.”

Another mention is located on page 52 in Restrictive Labeling Section “Avoid contact with foliage, green stems, or fruit crops, or any desirable plants and trees, other than soybean with the Roundup Ready gene as severe injury or destruction will result."

    Q
Can Grass Out Max (Clethodim Herbicide) be used to permanently kill off bermudagrass and allow me reseed after?
    A

Grass Out Max (Clethodim Herbicide) can be used to kill actively growing bermudagrass in ornamental beds however would not be used for turf applications. This product is only a post emergent and does not have any pre emergent qualities to prevent bermudagrass from germinating.

Depending on the type of turfgrass you will be reseeding with, you can kill the bermudagrass with a non selective like Roundup QuickPro and then reseed after 2 weeks. If you are reseeding with a cool season turfgrass such as Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Ryegrass – Tenacity Herbicde can be applied for pre emergent control of weeds at the same time as seeding. View the Tenacity product label for more information.

    Q
What temperature is best for spraying Grass Out Max?
When is it too cold to spray or to have it work, even at night?
    A

When using Grass Out Max (Clethodim Herbicide) label states that it will be most effective if applied at higher than 47 degrees but not exceeding 80 degrees or crop injury may occur.  Best to apply during the day so the application has enough time to dry before night fall.

    Q
Will Grass Out Max keep zoysia, poa, Bermuda, etc. out of my tall fescue lawn?
    If not what product will.
    A

Grass Out Max (Clethodim Herbicide) is designed specifically for killing grassy weeds including fescue in ornamental areas without harming desirable shrubs and roses, it is not for use in lawns at all.

Since poa annua is so closely related to cool seasons grasses, like fescue and ryegrass, there are not any herbicides that can be applied to kill the poa without also harming the fescue and ryegrass. We do have one product called Prograss EC Herbicide, but it is very expensive. We recommend spot treating the poa annua with a glyphosate product and then just reseeding those areas.

Unfortunately, we do not carry any herbicides that are labeled to kill zoysia in a tall fescue lawn. You will either need to spot-treat the unwanted grasses with a glyphosate product like Roundup Quik Pro and reseed.  Fusilade II can be used to get rid of Bermuda grass in tall fescue.  You will also need to add a nonionic surfactant for best results.  Please be advised that Bermuda grass is extremely difficult to control and you will likely need to make several applications. With Fusilade II Herbicide, it is recommended to apply the product in the early morning hours or late evening hours when the temperatures are below 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
