Product Overview

The Orcon Control White Fly Encarsia Formosa (1000 eggs) (EF-C1000) contains tiny wasps that control damaging whiteflies in greenhouses, interior plantscapes and outdoor gardens. It specifically targets Trialeurodes Vaporariorum, a common pest that is found on cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and poinsettias. Encarsia Formosa works by laying inside of the scale. The eggs then hatch, and the larvae feed and mature inside the pests, causing death to scale. Killing period is expected to be up to 20 to 25 days in length. For application, release the wasps at the first signs of whitefly. Each container includes 1,000 wasp eggs.

Encarsia Formosa

USE: The Encarsia formosa (wasp) is a parasite of the glasshouse or greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), a common pest of many plants in outdoor gardens and interior plantscapes. Greenhouse whiteflies are naturally found on cucumbers, peppers, poinsettias, tomatoes and other plants that stay very close to the ground.

RELEASE:  The Encarsia should be released as soon as possible, preferably when it is sunny and warm. Remove cards from container, separate along perforations, and hang on branches of plants in areas where white flies are present. If release must be delayed, keep the package out of sunlight and store at 40 to 50 degrees.

LIFE CYCLE: The Encarsia formosa is really tiny wasps, the size of a pencil dot, and is completely harmless to humans and pets. They only kill immature whiteflies, called whitefly scale. This is done by laying their eggs inside the scale. The wasps eggs hatch and feed, and mature inside the scale, thus killing it and turn it black. This process takes about 20 to 25 days. After that they emerge as adults and mate, and instantly begin destroying more whitefly scale. This process continues of laying eggs during their 10 day adult life cycle.

RECOMMENDATIONS: The Encarsia (wasps) must be released at the FIRST SIGNS of whiteflies. If the whitefly infestation is already high, it must be reduced by using a insecticidal soap before releasing the Encarsia.

Since the life cycle of Encarsia is about 30 days, the best results are obtained when three releases are applied during 1 week intervals. This way is the most effective because there is a continuous force of Encarsia wasp adults, and the young of the first release will be fully developed at the same time the last release adults are declining.

COVERAGE: Release 1 Encarsia at a rate of a square foot of planted area, or 1 to 3 per plant, whichever is higher. There are at least 100 Encarsia on each card, 10 cards per strip.

GENERAL INFORMATION: White fly scales are white and are usually found on the underside of leaves. After they are parasitized, they turn black, and in a few more days, the adult Encarsia emerge from a small hole that you can see if you look carefully.

The white cards have a black parasite scales inside the circle. The Encarsia should begin emerging 2 to 10 days after receipt. The appearance of the cards does not change after hatching. To confirm the hatching process, use a microscope or magnifying glass to see the holes in the blackened scales on the card.
