Works but very overpriced considering the cheap quality

    By Knt on 08/31/2010

This device is basically a small heater and a wire shelf inside a duffle bag; plug it in, it heats up. There's a timer and indoor/outdoor thermometer included in the box, but they're not automated or connected to the packtite; it's up to you to visually check the time and temperature from time to time. There's only one shelf inside the device, so it's not very useful if you're putting in a lot of personal items. The temp got up to 125 in about 40minutes, then up to 143. I'm going to buy a wire shelf to place on top of the single shelf, so that I can at least put stuff on two levels. This feels like a successful high school science project; it does the job but not much else. Definitely NOT worth $288, but unfortunately there's no other device like it out there.

PackTite Portable Bed Bug Heat Treatment Device

    By Pamela on 09/21/2010

    Verified Purchase

It worked well except for one thing: The thermometer went on the fritz, and eventually stopped working entirely, somewhere around 110 degrees. It wasn't the batteries (we tried 2 brand new sets). Possibly it was from the heat of sitting on the PackTite, but there is nowhere else to put it. It needs a better thermometer; for the cost; there ought to be one.

Bug Cooker. Not Effective if Suitcase Full.

    By Steve on 02/03/2011

    Verified Purchase

This device works well as long as the suitcase is not full of clothes. It is best to remove clothes, put them in a plastic bag and immediately wash in hot water. The suitcase and non-washables can be easily heated without the clothes inside. The temperature in the center of the bag needs to be above 120 degrees for 1 hr to kill the bedbugs. With a stuffed suitcase, I was only able to get the temp up to 113. Lightly filled suitcase got up to between 123 and 135 degrees. Helps to cover the PackTite with a towel to keep the heat from escaping.

Great product but could use tweaking

    By Carrie on 03/16/2011

Much less damaging to clothes than using the dryer but I'd like to see a more efficient model for commercial use - this can take several hours, and the device heats up the surrounding area. Fine for occasional use but I run a consignment shop and want to heat treat all textiles. Also, heat is rather unevenly distributed; I plan on buying another temperature gauge to get a more accurate reading of what's going on in there.

    Peace of mind

    By Steve on 01/26/2011

    Verified Purchase

The device works well most of the time. If the suitcase is full of clothes then it may not get all the way up to the necessary 120 degrees. It worked great for partially filled suitcases. Quality was fine. It would be nice if they could get the price down a bit.

Q
Will cold temperatures kill bedbugs? If so , how long does it take?
A
There has been some research that indicates that freezing temperatures can kill bedbugs, but this method is not very effective. This research says that a deep freezer (big freezer chests only, regular household fridge/freezers do not get cold enough) can kill bedbugs, but the items must be left in the freezer for several weeks. Heat seems to kill bedbugs faster and more efficiently than freezing. Steamers that reach temperatures over 120 degrees are very effective for treating mattresses, box springs and other furniture. You can use any household dryer to kill bedbugs on clothing, shoes, stuffed animals and pillows. If you have a dryer with a rack inside, you can also place books, knickknacks and other items in the dryer to eliminate bedbugs (items must be left in dryer for about 30 minutes). We also carry the Packtite Portable Bedbug Heat Treatment device. The Packtite would enable you to treat just about any object that can fit inside of the device.

Q
Can you use the packtite to heat laptops tvs etc? What is the internal temp at its highest?
A
It is not recommended to use the packtite to treat electronics.  The packtite is meant to treat items you would not want to launder or that can get wet in a washer, such as luggage, shoes, stuffed animals, etc.  Thee PackTite can heat up to 150 degrees when items are inside it.  When there is nothing in the PackTite it can reach up to 170 degrees.  For treating electronics such as laptops or other items you cannot heat or get wet, we recommend the Nuvan Pro Strips.

Q
If I use the Packtite when I bring luggage home from trips, is it ok to Packtite dirty clothes?

Will the Packtite "bake" in the dirt and smell?

A
You should just wash and dry any dirty clothes in your luggage. Running clothes through a wash cycle and clothes dryer on high heat will kill all stages of bed bugs.  Baking the dirty clothes in the PackTite for a couple of hours may in fact "bake" stains and odors into the clothes.

Q
Is the Packtite UL approved?

Does this product have a safety rating for fire or does it have a UL rating?

A
The Packtite is made with UL listed parts, but the unit itself is still waiting for finalization on being UL listed.  The Packtite does come with a micro switch to turn the unit off if it exceeds 190 degrees.
