Product Overview

The Monterey Grass Getter Herbicide is a systemic and selective herbicide that kills weedy grasses without harming the plants. It is mainly used on flowers, ornamental groundcovers, evergreens, shrubs, trees, bedding plants, fruits and vegetables. This herbicide effectively controls crabgrass, Bermudagrass, quackgrass, foxtail and other weedy grasses. The product is best used when added at 1 oz. per gallon of water. Once applied, the grass will stop growing, will turn reddish then yellow and will die in 1-3 weeks time. Grass Getter Herbicide is also responsive and works even faster in warmer than cooler temperatures. This herbicide is best applied when weeds are actively growing and young. For some perennial grasses, it may require a second application after 7-14 days from the first application. The Monterey Grass Getter Herbicide is available in 8 ounce, pint and gallon sizes.

Note: Do not use Grass Getter on your turf grass lawn. Please refer to Zone Map and see which plants will thrive at certain zones.

FAQs:

What is Grass Getter?
Grass Getter is a post-emergent herbicide based on the active ingredient sethoxydim. It is widely used in agriculture as a systemic grass killer under the trade name Poast. Grass Getter selectively eliminates grasses out of broadleaf plants. (This is the opposite of 2,4-D products which selectively eliminate broadleaf weeds in grasses). Formerly, this product was named Poast.

What weeds does Grass Getter control?
Grass Getter is used to control annual grasses and hard-to-kill perennial grasses such as bermudagrass, johnsongrass and quackgrass. In California and Arizona, it is especially effective on perennial bermudagrass. It also controls annual grasses.

What weeds are missed with a Grass Getter application?
Grass Getter does not control broadleaf weeds, nutgrass or annual bluegrass.

How much Grass Getter should I apply?
With a tank sprayer, mix 1 oz. of Grass Getter with 1 gallon of water. This will treat approximately 1800 sq. ft. Also add 1 oz. of an oil concentrate, like Herbicide Helper to make the herbicide more effective.

Should I use a surfactant with Grass Getter?
For good weed control, Herbicide Helper should be added at 1 oz. per gallon of water. This is our brand of oil concentrate.

What can I use Grass Getter on?
Grass Getter can be used over the top of flowers, bedding plants, shrubs, trees, groundcovers, and certain fruits and vegetables. (Check the label for specific varieties). There are more than 300 ornamental species listed on the Grass Getter label. Do not use Grass Getter on your turf grass lawn. What species should Grass Getter not be used on?
Care should be used around the following species: Azaleas (var. Snow), Japanese privet, potentilla, snow in summer, red oak, white oak and ornamental grasses.

Can I spray lawn weeds with it?
No. Grass Getter should not be used on lawns because it kills grasses. Avoid drift onto lawns and desirable plants. If drift occurs, wash off foliage immediately with water.

Can I use Grass Getter on my dichondra lawn?
Yes.

Can I spray Grass Getter over the top of bedding plants, shrubs, etc.?
Yes, Grass Getter may be applied over desirable plants infested by weedy grasses. Do not exceed dosage rate per gallon of spray.

When is the best time to apply Grass Getter?
Apply when the weeds are young and actively growing. A second application 7-14 days after the first may be needed on some perennial grasses.

What can I expect to see once I apply Grass Getter?
Once applied, the grass stops growing. It will turn a reddish color, then yellow, and will die in 1-3 weeks time.

Is Grass Getter temperature responsive?
Yes, Grass Getter works faster in warmer temperatures than in cooler temperatures.

How long until I can turn on the sprinklers after applying Grass Getter?
Wait at least 1 hr. before watering after application. Avoid applying Grass Getter if rain is expected in the next few hours.

How is Grass Getter packaged?
Grass Getter is sold in 1/2 pint, pint and gallon sizes. It is now available in a handy Grass Getter Twin Pack, with the herbicide and oil concentrate together. These new Twin Pack sizes are sold in 1/2 pint and 1 pint sizes.

It's a good product. I used it mostly to control my "torpedo grass". Not sure if it is the best product for this use, do you have any recommendations? Thanks

Q
Can Monterey Grass Getter be used to kill/suppress bermuda grass and not harm centipede grass or oak trees?
A

Monterey Grass Getter Herbicide is a grass killer so it would harm or kill the centipede grass in addition to the Bermuda.  It is is only meant to be used around flowers, evergreens, ornamental groundcovers, bedding plants, shrubs, trees, fruits, and vegetables.  It would not harm the oak tree. We actually do not carry a product that is labeled to remove Bermuda grass from centipede.  The only suggestion we can give is to kill the Bermuda with a glyphosate product and then re-seed the centipede in those areas.

Q
Will Monterey Grass Getter Herbicide kill bermuda and not harm St. Augustine?
A

Monterey Grass Getter Herbicide is a grass killer, so it will injure the St Augustine and should not be used on lawns.

Unfortunately, Bermuda grass is so closely related to St. Augustine grass that there is nothing that will remove Bermuda from St. Augustine and not hurt the Bermuda as well.  In your situation it is recommended to spot treat the Bermuda with Round Up and kill it directly, and then replant St. Augustine in those areas. We do carry some professional round up products.

Q
Can I mix Monterey Grass Getter Herbicide with 2-4-D?
A

We recommend that you check the product labels for the Monterey Grass Getter Herbicide and the 2, 4D Herbicide you want to mix to confirm your type of desired and targeted areas are listed. You can perform a small tank jar test for a compatibility check and test a small, inconspicuous area first prior to dispersing the solution over the entire treatment surface.
