Identify the Rodent First

The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure you know what kind of rodent you’re dealing with. Rats are more cautious and eat most of their food at once, whereas mice are curious and nibble a little at a time. Also, rats are much larger than mice and their droppings are twice the size of mouse droppings.

It's important to know whether you're dealing with a mouse or rat because some products (like traps) come in two different sizes: small for mice and large for rats. Learn more about rodent identification and control.

How Do Rat Traps Work?

There are two different kinds of rat traps, each of which work in their own way and each of which have their own advantages.

The first type is the oldest; it is the simple snap trap, which consists of a spring loaded mechanism that is tied into a space where bait of any kind can be placed. When the bait is removed by the rodent the spring will fire, snapping the trap shut and instantly killing the animal caught in this mechanism.

The second type of trap is known as a glue board or a rat glue trap, and is slightly less complicated than the spring loaded trap. It uses sticky glue that has been applied to a cardboard or wooden board and can be left out in the open. Whenever a rat tries to cross the glue it will get stuck and be unable to free itself, leading to its eventual death.
