    Q
Can Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran be used on Tilia x Mongolia Little Linden?
    A

Per the Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran product label: “Do not apply this product, by any application method, to linden, basswood or other Tilia species.” Due to the sensitive nature of Linden trees, we recommend speaking with the master gardener at your local cooperative extension office to determine what products can safely be applied.

    Q
Will Safari 20SG control/prevent Elm Leaf Beetle?
I have a customer who has 2- 50 ft tall Siberian or American Elms on her property, I would rather apply Safari as a basal trunk application than to apply a foliar application due to the potential for drift. Aslo, the uptake timing is approx. 2-3 weeks? thx.
    A
Yes, Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran is labeled for leaf beetles and can be used as a basal system application by spacing injections evenly around trunk no more than 12" out from the base. Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran is a super systemic with a faster uptake that normally takes about 3 weeks to translocate.

  • Asked by Chris from Coronado, Ca

    Q
What's alternative to Safari 20SG for California?
I've been using Safari 20SG against myaporum thrips successfully (basal trunk application), but now not shippable to CA. What effective alternate product do you recommend?
    A

We do have various products that are labeled for thrips that can go to California. ImidaPro 4SC is a very good product that can be used as a basal trunk treatment. It is also labeled for certain edibles as well. If you would like another product that contains the active ingredient Dinotefuran, Zylam Liquid Systemic Insecticide would be a good choice and is labeled for thrips. Be sure to check the product label to be sure that it is labeled for your needs. It also comes in a soluble granule formulation, Zylam 20SG Systemic Turf Insecticide.

    Q
What is the dilution and application rate of Safari 20SG to use for soil drench for euyonymous scale on pachysandra?
I want to apply Safari as a soil drench to a bed of pachysandra. What is the dilution and volume I should use - i.e., 3 tsp per gallon? and what volume of this dilution should I use per square foot of bed?
    A

Per the product label for Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran on ornamental shrubs/ground covers for Euonymus scale, you would use 3 - 6 grams (1.25 - 2.5 level teaspoons) per foot of height and apply 1 - 4 pints of drench solution per foot of height.    Pull back mulch before drenching..  Adjust drench volume based on soil type, soil moisture and thickness of mulch so that product is moved into root zone.  Please refer page 11 of the product label for complete instructions.

    Q
Can you help me with control of palmetto scale (comstockeilla sabalis) on a sabal palm?
The scale is winning on my 8 ft florida sabal (not much of a trunk yet). Its under a live oak tree and sprays and other systemics have not work. Texas A&M said try dinotefuran. I have a friend who has same scale on sabal minors. How much does a 12 ounce bottle cost? It appears the scale is in the heart of the palm as gets in between unopen fronds.
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran would be a great product to use for Pamletto Scale. One 12oz bottle is $119.95 and will make approx. 100 gallons of mixed solution.

  • Asked by Peter from Columbia, Md

    Q
What's the best dosage (drench and foliar) and timing to treat woolly adelgids on an Eastern Hemlock with Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide?
I live in Central Maryland and the Hemlock tree is about 16 feet tall. I've previously used imidacloprid (once) as a drench. Would basal bark spray application of Safari be as effective as drench?
    A

You can apply Safari 20SG as a drench or as a basal trunk spray for woolly adelgids. Most folks will use the trunk spray for ease of application and quick uptake. You can view these instructions on page 8 of the Supplemental Label here. You would use 12 – 24 oz per gallon of water.  Depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65-85” of cumulative trunk diameter. Here is a link to an application video with Safari from the manufacturer that we recommend watching: http://www.valent.com/professional/products/safari/video.cfm

For foliar spray, you would use 1 tsp per gallon of water to cover about 200 square feet.

For the best application timing in your area, we would suggest contacting a Master Gardener.

  • Asked by Norman from Houston. Texas
    10/15/2016
    Q
Will Safari 20 SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran treat scale in sago palms?
    A

Yes, Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran, a super-systemic insecticide with quick uptake and knockdown, controls a broad spectrum of ferocious and invasive pests, including scale.  The dilution rate for a foliar spray would be 1.0 tsp per gallon of water to cover 200 sq ft. You do not need to trim infested branches unless they are so badly damaged that they cannot recover. We recommend that you speak with the manufacturer of Safari so they can provide additional treatment options and times using their product. Q
Do you know how I would mix Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran to achieve a 20% solution?
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran is not mixed to get a 20% solution.  It contains 20% Dinotefuran so there are no instructions for applying at that percentage.  The rate when mixed will be lower and depends on what you are treating for and what you are treating on and is not percentage based.  Please refer to the product label for complete instructions for your need.

  • Asked by Seth from Dallas, Tx
    02/13/2018
    Q
Which rate should I use for application of Safari 20SG on hedges?
We have a 4 ft tall, 100' foot long Holly hedge composed of 40 individual plants that we would like to drench with Safari 20SG. Based on the label, the high rate for a 4' x 100' hedge is 4 oz of Safari 20SG. However, if I calculate per individual shrub within the hedge it comes out to approximately 0.85 oz per 4' Holly for a total of 34 oz for the entire hedge. Using 4 oz of product vs 34 oz of product seems dramatically different. Is this correct or am I missing something here?
    A

We understand the different rate directions can be confusing on the Safari 20SG. You should get great results from using the higher rate under the product label directions for use on hedges. Since your hedges are in a row and so close together, some of the active ingredient from each plant's root system would reach over to the neighboring plants. So you could use the rate of 1 oz per foot of hedge height per 100 linear feet rate, which would put you at 4 oz for 100 linear feet of shrubs which is 4 feet high.
