    Q
How do I apply Safari granules for basal bark treatment?
Assuming the larger container (granules) are more cost effective. What would be the mix of granule per gallon for basal bark treatment of borers.
    A

You can view these instructions on page 8 of the Supplemental Label here. You would use 12 – 24 oz  of Safari 20SG per gallon of water.  Depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65-85” of cumulative trunk diameter.

    Q
I have a advanced case of Tulip Tree Scale in my Magnolia Grandiflora in Southern California.
Research on the internet suggested a soil drench with Imidacloprid, basal trunk spray of Safari and a Bifen spray would be most effective. Do you agree and if so would it be okay to do it in January since the climate is mild here in Southern California this time of year? I recently found a Magnolia leave with all stages of Tulip Tree Scale in progress.
    A

Yes, you can use an imidicloprid product such as Dominion 2L insecticide as a soil drench around the root system of the tree while the tree is actively growing. This is typically done in the late winter/ early spring. You would use 0.1 – 0.4 oz of Dominion 2L per inch of trunk diameter at breast height diluted in water in a bucket or watering can and poured around the base of each tree. We generally recommend that you pair a soil drench with a topical spray such as a horticultural oil or a pyrethroid such as Talstar P.  The contact sprays are most effective when applied to the crawlers that have emerged and are active in mid to late summer.  You can also then spray the trunk with Safari.

    Q
Can we tap maple trees that were treated with Safari 20SG?
We applied Safari 20sg according to the instructions on several maple trees that had lanternfly population. This was about 4 months ago in late September. Can we now tap those trees for maple sap or would you recommend not?
    A

Since Safari 20SG is not labeled for use on maple trees that are tapped for syrup, we would not recommend this application. Usually you will need to wait at least one year from treatment to harvest edibles that have been treated with a systemic insecticide. We recommend contacting Valent directly at 800-898-2536.

    Q
How often to apply Safari 20SG as a drench on potted gardenias to control mealy bugs?
These bushes are indoors for the winter
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran usually only needs to be applied once a year as a soil drench but it can be applied more often if needed as long as you do not go over the max rate per year listed on the product label.  Systemic products applied to the soil usually do not need to be applied more than 1-2 times per year though.  If you follow this link and scroll to page 10 of the Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide Product Label , it has a chart and instructions for use in containerized plants. It goes over potted plants by size in inches rather than gallons so you will want to measure your plants and reference the chart for how much solution for your needs. Also be sure to bring the plants outside before treating until the soil dries, typically 4-6 hours

    Q
How often should Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran be applied for preventative maintenance on hemlocks for Wooly Adelgid?
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran will typically last between 6 months to 1 year and is best applied before pests are an issue, the label does state to make the first application just before pest populations reach an economic threshold. If necessary, make a second application after 14-21 days. Please keep in mind that there are many variables that can influence how long a systemic is still active in the target plant such as soil condition, rainfall, and health of the plant.  Most people only apply once per year but no more than twice.

Please review the product label for application instructions for foliar, broadcast and soil denching to treat Hemlock Woolly Adelgid beginning on page 8 of the product label and ending on page 15.

    Q
How far will a 3 lb jug go on pine scale? Drench or spray.
I am getting a lot of trees with pine scale. When is the optimum time to treat them?
    A
The best time to treat is once in mid-April and then about 10 days later so that you get the crawlers when they hatch, which can occur over 2-4 week period. Once you've knocked the population back, you shouldn't have to retreat it every year. It may take two years, though, to get it under control. The length Safari 20SG will treat all depends on how large the diameter of the trees are. Please refer to the application charts on the product label.

    Q
Sensation Maple with Armored or Oyster scale
Which product (Zylam or Safari) would work best for an armored scale or oyster shell scale on a Sensation Maple tree. Would I use either product as a drench or trunk spray? Thank you so very much for a reply!!!!!
    A
Either product will work very well to control armored scale on your Maple tree. It would be best to use the Safari 20 SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuron as a systemic soil drench as well as a foliar spray. Please be sure to read the product label before complete use instructions.

  • Asked by John from Maryland

    Q
Is a surfactant recommended for basal bark treatment of hemlock woolly adelgid?
10-70 cm dbh hemlocks. The larger ones have very woody bark.
    A

Per the product label, you can mix Safari 20SG with a surfactant, but it may not be very helpful for woolly adelgids in particular since they are mostly controlled by ingesting the active ingredient rather than by contact:

Tank mixing with a surfactant may improve control of pests such as whitefly, mealybug and scale. Confirm plant safety of tank mix in small area before using on a commercial scale.

    Q
    Cost vs Imidacloprid
It looks like the fertilome may be more cost effective for EAB? However, with Dinoteguran as a trunk spray you don't have to worry about soil moisture and leaf debris. So Dinoteguran may be more likely to succeed?
    A
What exactly would you be treating for? The best product to use is based on that versus the treatment method.

scale on trees too mature for treatment?
hello, wondering if i can send in some pics for you to determine severity of infection. I have read several of the q&a topics and one saying impossible to control scale if it is too far along has me concerned about wasting my money here. Please advise.
    A
A better option may be to contact your local cooperative extension office. They would better be able to give you an idea of what stage the scale is in on your trees. We would be happy to let you know which products work best for scale.

  • Asked by Bill from Key West, Fl
    01/05/2016
    Q
Can I treat borers in a key lime tree with Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide?
    A

Safari is not labeled to be used on anything edible.  Â Unfortunately once the beetles have already infested the bark of a lime tree there are not any viable treatment options. In cases of infestation the general recommendation is to simply protect the surrounding trees with preventative sprays with a product labeled for such a use. This can be done using something like Monterey Garden Insect Spray.

    Q
Can I mix Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran to treat thrips on orchids using a two gallon pump sprayer?
If so, what ratio per gallon can be use for thrips and scale? I am a hobby orchid grower with 18 x 28 greenhouse. I'd like to use Safari to treat thrips on my orchid collection but don't see a ratio for my use.
    A

Safari 20SG can be applied in greenhouses for treating scale and thrips but does not specifically list orchids.

We recommend that contact your local cooperative extension office for a product recommendation. Please let us know and we can see if we can get it for you.

    Q
How much Safari 20SG do I add to a 1 gal sprayer to do a bark treatment?
treating walnut hull maggots on black walnuts.
    A

Safari 20SG is only labeled for non-bearing nut trees and does not have labeling for walnut maggots. For other bark applications, the amount of product you need will depend on the size of the tree. Page 14 of the product label has instructions on this application. We would suggest contact your local Cooperative Extension office for assistance with this pest.
