disappointed-not what they used to be

    By Leslie on 06/13/2019

I was specifically looking for these feeders because I've had one for eons, and it is the hummingbirds favorite. I was under the impression these were colored glass, which is the reason I was looking for these specifically—I wanted colored glass, not plastic, not color paper wrapped. I ordered 2 of the Schrodt Ruby Paradise Lantern Hummingbird Feeders in March…set them out one at a time—rotated them out—while I was waiting for another shepherds hook for the other… As I was washing the one—simply under hot water, no scrubbing, no soap or other cleaners—it started to peel!! I've had my other feeder like this for over 13 years without any issues—through freezing winters & all—so i didn't expect a problem within the first week of use. i'm really surprised how quickly these started to peel. if I had been soaking them or using something abrasive, but this was simply rinsing in hot water. NOT what i would expect from a feeder this expensive (DoMyOwn had the best price for it...i've seen them for up to $50!) They are listed as Ruby Red Kiln-fired glass. NOTHING to indicate they are paper wrapped. Songbird Essentials acquired Schrodt Designs in 2015, so I can only guess that the quality of the originals is no longer to be expected or a concern for Songbird Essentials. DoMyOwn said they would reach out to the manufacturer, and offered a return label. However, being I never had an issue in the 13 years I've had my other one, I had put the boxes in recycle…and with it being breeding season, ALL 5 feeders are very busy. So, needless to say, I am really disappointed & feel ripped off—not by DoMyOwn, but by Songbird Essentials. I give Songbird Essentials a ZERO, and will never buy anything under their name again. If these didn't peel in the first week of use, I'd give them a 4 or 5. My 13 year old one is the hands down favorite of hummingbirds. These 2 take second place…and the one that is peeling the most, is used less than the one that is peeling slower. In fact it takes 4th place of the 5, after the HummZinger.
