    Q
How much solution of the Termidor Sc or Talstar P should I spray in the ground were the holes were drilled?
I had my house serviced by a pest co.and they drilled holes every 12 inches, how much solution of the Termidor Sc or Talstar P should I spray in the ground were the holes were drilled(concrete)...Dan
    A
We recommend you use the Termidor SC as it is a much better termite control product. Per the product label you will still need to use 4 gallons of finished solution for every 10 linear feet. So if there is 1 hole every 12 inches you should apply .4 gallon of diluted solution per drilled hole to achieve the correct continuous barrier rate. You can use a sprayer with the nozzle adjusted to pinstream to apply the product to the holes or you can use a funnel inserted into the drilled holes and pour the solution in with a bucket.

    Q
What product is good for fleas on concrete driveway/walkway, dry grass dirt perimeter, lawn, and indoor use?
Can you recommend a good product to rid of fleas on concrete walkway, dry grass dirt perimeter around house, dry lawn, and indoor carpet use.
    A
The best products for flea control outdoors would be Talstar P mixed with NyGuard IGR. The Talstar is the insecticide that will kill the fleas and leave a residual, and the NyGuard is the birth control that will halt the infestation from growing. Mix these in your sprayer together with water and spray any areas outdoors where you are having a problem with fleas or any other insect. For indoor control, you would use Ultracide which is a flea aerosol. It comes ready to use and has both the adulticide and igr (birth control) to provide you with the same type of control indoors as you have outdoors. You will need to go through and vacuum all flooring and furniture prior to using the product. Once vacuumed, use the Ultracide to spray down all carpets, hardwoods, baseboards, rugs, pet bedding and furniture to eliminate the fleas. After application you will leave the home until the product has had time to dry which normally takes about an hour or so. Once dry, all pets, children and adults can re-enter the home and resume normal activity. You will need to vacuum daily for 14 days and then do a second application of the Ultracide. You can see more tips for treating in our article How To Get Rid Of Fleas Indoors.

    Q
Will Talstar P and Bifen IT be the best choice for mosquitos, spiders and other general pests?
Hello... Last "mid summer" I used Talstar liquid all around the house, patio and deck as well as my shop building to try and control ants, spiders and other bugs in general. I also used Bifen granules in the yard and shrub areas. Between those two products, it seem to work very well for the bulk of the summer season, even on Mosquitoes. I'm out of the granules and low on the Talstar and need to get more but my question is: Is there something that I should be using instead of the Talstar and Bifen that would work better yet? We're in Idaho and the main insects I'd like to stop are the ants, all spiders in general and the mosquitoes. I realize there are many other insects that these products kill as well which is good but you have so many products available and at all seem to overlap in killing different types if insects that I'm having a hard time deciding on what would be the best to use this again year. Thanks much, Duane Walker
    A
Talstar P or Bifen IT mixed with NyGuard IGR would be a great choice for mosquito control and they are also labeled for spiders and other listed insects. You will mix an ounce per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft per month on the exterior of the structure. During mosquito season, you will add 3ml to the Talstar P or Bifen IT and it will last for 7 months. It is an insect growth regulator and does not have to be applied as often as the insecticide concentrate.

    Q
Talstar P Pet safe when dry? Morning dews?
In my region we frequently have heavy dews each morning. I have 2 dogs that go out early morning when the dew is still on the lawn to do their jobs. What about then? Is it harmful after application when it becomes wet over and over again? My Boxer tends to clean herself by licking her legs every day.
    A
Talstar P (Talstar One) is completely safe after it has dried. Your pets are safe to enter the area even if there is a dew. It will not cause the active ingredient to "reactivate" to a state that could be harmful. Also, after dilution there is only a large enough amount of active ingredient to kill small insects.

    Q
Does Talstar P kill lightning bugs?
    A
Talstar P would kill lightning bugs if they were to land on the treated surface and crawl across it.  Insecticides are not really selective in what they kill and Talstar is labeled for over 75 different pests and will kill just about anything.

    Q
I did a yard spray with talstar p 7 hours before it rained...will the rain have any effect after it was alread
I know it says not to apply if it's going to rain...but he product was dried way before it rained.
    A
Normally as long as an insecticide like Talstar has had at least 6 hours of dry time after it has been applied, then it is considered rain fast to most rain conditions that would come afterwards. If you had a heavy down pour for a few days that started 7 hours after then you may need to reapply at that point. But standard summer rain showers should not break down the residual.

  • Asked by Louise from Houston, Tx

    Q
What is considered an "excessive temperature" when storing Talstar P in a dark shed over the summer?
90, 95, 100 degrees? How long can it be stored at these temps before it affects the Talstar? In what way does it affect it? I am assuming it might make it less effective -- if so, how much less effective? On the other end of the scale, if stored in the same shed over the winter and it freezes outside periodically, how does this affect Talstar? Thanks.
    A
When storing any insecticide such as Talstar P, an extreme temperature is anything below 35 degrees and anything over 90 degrees.  Storing above or below these temps for more than a few hours can decrease the effectiveness of the product and cause it to separate as well as the potential for the chemical to break down.  Freezing and unfreezing is biggest concern so products should not be left outside in a shed over the winter.  If any product is only exposed to sub freezing temperatures for a short period of time and the product looks exactly the same as before it was exposed, it should be fine.

    Q
I have a multitude of problems with bugs in my home. What is the best way to safely exterminate them?
I have found spiders, silverfish, centipedes, milipedes, ants, etc. in my home and want to accomplish safe extermination. I think it would be best to do outside as well as inside pest control but I am concerned about the safety of my dog. What product(s) would you recommend to accomplish pest control but also be safe for my pet and myself?
    A
Talstar P (Talstar One) is one of our best sellers for all around pest control. Talstar kills over 75 insect pests and can be used for indoor pest control, outdoor pest control, has a long residual, so it keeps on killing pests for over three months after you've sprayed it, is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, won't break down easily with rainfall and is safe to use around pets. Be sure animals are out of the area while Talstar is being applied and then they can return as soon as the area is dry.

    Q
Japanese beetles are eating almost everything in my yard. What can I use that will be safe for my flowers?
They are also eating my flowering crab trees, oak trees and just about every tree in the area. Where do they come from and how can I safely rid my yard of these things? I have 3 Japanese Beetle bags out and they are each about 2 to 3 inches full of bugs, but they are everywhere. I have sprayed a 3 in 1 Systemic on my Rose bushes and flowers around the house and they are back in just a few days. Tonight, I counted over 200 hundred of them on a combination of trees and bushes in my yard. I spray the bugs with a Dawn dish soap and water mixture in between the Systemic spray, but I can't get ahead of them. HELP !!!
    A
We would recommend Talstar P.  It is a insecticide that is labeled for lawn and ornamentals and is safe for plants, bushes, shrubs and trees.  You can also apply it inside and outside your home for insects that try to enter the house.  You would not want to apply Talstar P on any garden vegetables or something you are going to eat.  TalstarP will provide a 30 day residual on the plants that you spray and should provide relief against the Japanese beetles.

    Q
I have larder beetles. I need to know what I can use to get rid of them but will not harm my Macaws?
I am in an apartment, and I know they are using the radiators. The eggs have hatched and now these beetles are already shedding by the time they get to the other register. My cat is excellent at finding these things. Anyway, I have asked my manager to have his bug guy come, but I get nowhere. I also have two Macaws that are VERY sensitive. I cannot even cook on Teflon, the fumes will kill them. Someone told me to use Bifenthrin, but is this safe? What are my alternatives?
    A
Bifenthrin is an active ingredient found in several products, Talstar P being the most popular and widely used bifenthrin product. Talstar P is a very safe product and is even labeled to be used in poultry houses and animal confinement areas. Having said that, we do not feel comfortable making a product recommendation for you because your birds are so sensitive. We recommend you speak to your veterinarian for recommendations or remove the birds completely during the entire treatment process.

    Q
I have tiny black ants living in bonsai pots outside. No food involved, sweet or greasy, how do I kill them?
These ants are also living in the lawn. There are two sizes, one is less than an eighth of an inch, the other is even tinier. They are shiny solid black. The tiniest ones will crawl up onto the tops of my feet and bite. They actually have eggs in the soil of the plant pots. I have a few mealybugs here and there, and the occasional group of aphids, but otherwise, I cannot figure out why they want to be in the pots. I would love to find a drench where I could submerge the whole pot and get rid of them for good. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
    A
You can use Talstar P to spray the plant and soil to get rid of these tiny pests. Since you know exactly where the ant colony is, you can treat it directly. Talstar P is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water and spray directly in the infested areas. You can use 1 oz of concentrate per gallon of water. Talstar can also be used to help eliminate ants in the yard and as a general insecticide to keep other nuisance pests out of your home

    Q
Can Talstar Pro be used on vegetable plants?
    A
Talstar P cannot be used on any type of edible vegetation. We do carry a wide variety of products that can be used on vegetables. You can type in the name of the vegetable you need to treat into the search window (upper left hand side) of our home page and this will help narrow down the choices. When you see the products come up you can click on them and you will be able to see the full product descriptions as well as the product label. We encourage our customers to read the product label of the product they are interested in purchasing to be sure it will fit their needs.

    Q
What would be the best killer for deer ticks?
    A

Talstar P would be a great choice for indoor and outdoor tick control. We also recommend adding an insect growth regulator such as Archer IGR to Talstar to stop the ticks from being able to mature while you are trying to eliminate the infestation. You will use 1 oz of Talstar +  1oz of Archer IGR per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft area. Do not make spot applications. Treat the entire area where exposure to ticks may occur. Use more water (not more product) when treating areas with dense ground cover or heavy leaf litter. Ticks may be reintroduced from surrounding areas on host animals. Retreatment may be necessary to achieve and/or maintain control during periods of high pest pressure. All of your pets should be treated with a product that is specifically labeled for use on pets for tick control.

You can also help by creating a "tick safe zone" in your yard. You should have an area that is at least 9 ft wide between your yard and any wooded area. Trim back trees to allow as much sunlight as possible into your yard. Keep grass as short. Remove as much leaf litter as possible. A clearly defined, well manicured border between your yard and any wooded areas or weedy lots will reduce the chance of ticks infesting your yard.

    Q
What is the best product to help eliminate spiders from neglected property including in trees?
I have just recently bought about 4 acres of land (no house) ,which is about 1/4 mile from a lake, which has not been kept up in a very long time. The grass, ivy, and bugs have had free reign during that time. I purchased the deltagard from you for the chiggers and other ground insects and it's worked great! There are MANY spiders on the land, both on the ground and in the trees. They literally land on you if you walk underneath the trees. I have access to a pressure washer to use to spray the trees (especially around the firepit and patio area). The 3 trees that I would be spraying are 100 year old oaks. I don't, however, want to hurt the trees or the birds. Do you have a liquid insecticide that I could use for this?
    A
Talstar P would be a good choice to use outdoors to help control spiders. It is important to remember that Talstar P does not give an immediate knockdown but instead works over a period of several hours to kill spiders that have come into contact with the product. Talstar P will also help to get rid of the insects that spiders feed on and that will help to stop new spiders from moving in. You can spray the lawn, trees and other plants with Talstar P.

    Q
In what proportion do I mix Talstar P for spraying in the house? And also in the Yard?
    A
The Talstar P product label allows you to use 1/4 fl oz - 1 fl oz per gallon of water for indoor and outdoor spraying. We recommend using the 1 fl oz per gallon of water usage rate for the fastest knockdown and longest lasting residual. Please refer to the Talstar P product label for complete usage instructions.

    Q
What product would you recommend for tick elimination on house foundation, landscaping, and lawn?
We have app. 1/3-1/2 acre of lawn surrounded by tall weeds. We've created a mulch barrier around our mowed lawn, treated first with Cedarcide PCO and then with various big box store insecticides. All our attempts haven't been very successful. We are still finding ticks on us, the outside of house, our deck, our garden, our shed, our well-spiget, etc. What would be the best bang for our buck, AND be the most effective to get rid of these disgusting things!!! We've bought some DE, but it clogged our tow behind sprayer, so until we can figure the best way to apply the DE to our large lawn, that's on hold. Please help!!!
    A
Talstar P mixed with an Insect Growth regulator such as Nyguard IGR would be a good choice for tick control. Talstar P would work to kill ticks that come into contact with treated surfaces while the Nyguard would work to help stop juvenile ticks from reaching sexual maturity. You should remember that ticks may be hidden in tall or dense brush so higher treatment volumes may be needed to treat the entire plant, not just the top side of the plant where it is easiest to spray. You should try to get the application on the underside of leaves and all the way to the bottom of the plant. We recommend treating the entire infested area (no spot treating). When you are dealing with an area that has a high tick population you may be required to treat once a month from spring through to the first frost, no matter what product you use. Be sure all pets are treated with a product labeled for tick control. The problem on your property may be that ticks are being reintroduced into the area on a consistent basis by wildlife such as deer, raccoons or birds. You will be required to use non-chemical means to reduce the tick population in addition to insecticides. As with most pests you can modify the environment on your property to make it less favorable to ticks. Keeping grass and weeds cut short in tick infested areas increases tick death during hot weather, discourages wildlife and will reduce the amount of vegetation which may need a pesticide application to kill ticks. Clear away yard debris such as old firewood or leaf piles. Remove old or abandoned bird nests and rodent nests. Patch fences where wildlife may be gaining access to your property. It may also be helpful to have the ticks identified. By identifying the type of ticks you can better understand what type of animals may be bringing them to your property and you can modify the environment to make it less favorable for that host animal. You can contact your local cooperative extension office to request an insect identification.
