I also have bare soil (with nutsedge) throughout. I plan to plant a lawn in about 8 months to a year.

Because I have no plants, I thought about using vegetation killer, but do not want to damage the soil. What are my options? This stuff is spreading fast!

Answer:

If you only have bare soil with sedge growing from it, then you should just use a glyphosate product which will kill anything it touches basically.  Sedgehammer is great for sedge, but is meant for use when nutsedge is in grass that you don't want to kill.  A professional glyphosate will kill the nutsedge much quicker.  Also it does not stay in the soil that long, so you can re-seed just weeks after application.  Vegetation killers and soil sterilants are meant to not let anything grow in that area for a long time.  So if you plan on seeding eventually then you should not use a vegetation killer product.
