About Animal Control Poles

Animal control poles are constructed of a strong, usually aluminum posts with a noose at the end that will tighten with pressure. Control poles are most often used with dogs, and can be used in both an animal rescue and animal control capacity. Since the noose can tighten, it can injure animals and put them in danger, and must be used with the full knowledge of the use and risks. Here are some advantages and risks associated with animal control poles:

  • They are very useful in guiding animals out of tight places and cages, and keeping the handler safe if the animal is showing aggression.
  • They give the handler extra reach while keeping a safe distance.
  • Can help restrain wildlife without having to touch the animal, and will allow examination safely for both animal and handler.
  • There is a large margin for error when using this control tool, especially since it is difficult to properly place the noose on the animal.
  • Cannot be used on a wide variety of animals.

How To Use Animal Control Poles

Animal control poles should only be used with confidence. Please read these tips carefully for proper use, and always call animal control if the situation seems out of your control.

  • First and most importantly, animals should never be lifted or dragged with the pole. It is meant as a tool to guide animals into or out of kennels, or into or out of vehicles, etc. A ramp will be helpful if guiding an animal into a vehicle.
  • The noose should never be placed only around the animal’s neck. Proper use involves looping the noose under one front arm and around the neck, so the noose cannot strangle the animal.
  • They cannot be used on cats or small animals (like rabbits) because the risk of death or injury is too high to risk use.
  • Using this tool on wildlife is limited, but is great for using with raccoons, getting them out of cages, etc.
  • These are meant to be a temporary restraint in both control and rescue situations, so make sure you know where you are taking the animal before using the pole.
  • If animal control poles seem too complicated or daunting to use, you can try using a Y-pole, which is a pole with two padded prongs in a y-shape at the end, which can be used to gently pin an animal to the wall or cage so it can be approached or handled.
  • There are many models of animal control poles available, so make sure your pole is the right size and length to suit your needs.
