Bee Suit Considerations

Protection is not mandatory, and you can choose the level of protection you need depending on your project. Inexperience may make you lean towards a full body bee suit, but keep these things in mind when choosing your bee protection:

  • A veil, made of a fine mesh, can be secured with an elastic band or attached to a helmet. Regardless of what else you might choose, a veil is very necessary in protecting you against stings on your face, which can be very painful and dangerous. Even experienced beekeepers wear veils.
  • Bees are irritated by dark colored, textured, rough, or fuzzy clothing and are more prone to sting. Light colored, smooth fabric is the best choice, and many beekeepers look to khaki as their fabric of choice.
  • Gloves can be a crucial part of your protection. If you are exterminating or getting rid of a bee colony, etc., you will be in close contact with the bees. While gloves can make handling more difficult, inexperience may dictate this piece of protective beekeeping equipment.
  • Bee suits are the optimal level of protection. The type of beekeeper suits we sell will ensure that the bees cannot come in contact with your skin to sting you. They are made of light colored, smooth fabric, with elastic cuffs on wrists and ankles to keep the bees from getting in. The often come with full coverage gloves, and will have some sort of hat and veil that is securely attached to the suit.
  • Professional beekeeping suits and hats are an investment, but if you have constant bee, wasp, hornet, and yellow jacket problems, or you are a beekeeper, it is a good investment and can help you do it yourself economically and conveniently.
