    Q
Is Bifen IT effective for weevils?
I have a problem with white pine weevils. Is there a better alternative that would be more effective?
    A
Bifen IT is labeled for "weevils" in general and the active ingredient Bifenthrin is known to be effective for white pine weevils. It is important when using a foliar application that treatments start when adult weevils first start to appear in spring, usually around mid-April. At this time, Bifenthrin seems to be the only active ingredient available to homeowners for white pine weevil control. We also suggest you contact your local cooperative extension office for more tips on the best treatment time in your specific area.

    Q
How often do I need to treat my yard with Bifen IT?
If I have an acre of land how much do I need?
    A
Unfortunately you did not mention what pest you are trying to treat in your yard so we can not be very specific. The Bifen IT label does say that you can repeat applications as often as every 7 days outdoors but most customers do not repeat applications more than once a month for most pests. Again the usage rate of Bifen IT will vary greatly depending on what type of pest your are trying to control. The Bifen IT product label recommends 0.25-1.0 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft for most pests outdoors. You can find the usage rate tables starting on page 12 of the product label.

    Q
Is there a danger that citrus trees will absorb Bifen IT thru the SOIL if I spray my lawn for chinch bugs?
I am concerned whether the citrus fruit may be harmful to eat if the surrounding lawn area is treated. I know not to get any over-spray on the trees/fruit but I am not clear as to possible absorption via the soil.
    A
Bifen IT does not move through the soil. As long as you keep all spray applications out of the root zone and do not allow spray to drift toward the trees, the trees will not be affected by Bifen IT.

    Q
I've been using Bifen for ants, but still have earwigs and silverfish, what should I use for those?
I already put Dekko in the attic where I found silverfish. But I don't know where those earwigs come from?? It's not much, just a few, but I don't want them to hurt my paralyzed dog.
    A
That's awesome Bifen IT has been doing such a great job for you. To treat the Earwigs, please refer to our article Getting Rid of Earwigs. There are many steps you can take to treat and prevent earwigs and Silverfish. By following the steps in our article you will also help to eliminate the Silverfish as well. You also may want to try a residual spray like Demon WP that is labeled for earwigs and silver fish. You want to spray the entire perimeter indoors and out.

    Q
    Scorpion Control in Lawn
I use Cy Kick CS around my home but my yard is rather large and Cy Kick CS can get pricey. I'm looking to save a few dollars and spray another type of liquid pesticide. I was thinking Bifen IT but wasnt sure of it's effectiveness and residual for controlling Scorpions in my lawn. Granuals wont work since we have watering restrictions in South Texas. Any advice?
    A
The Cy Kick CS you have been using is a great product for Scorpions but we do understand the need for more cost effective options. You want to go with a product that will sit on top of the surface better than the Bifen IT. If you dont have any dark surfaces to treat, you could use a product like Cyper WP. It is a wettable powder you would mix with water and spray in the same manor you would the Cy Kick CS. A 1lb jar will yield 24-48 gallons of mixed solution depending on the mix ratio you use. If you do have dark surfaces to treat and you are worried about a visible residue, you could swap to something like Equil Lambda 9.7. The problem with treating for scorpions is they are so difficult to kill that it requires a higher dose of chemical per gallon with most products, and a wider area you have to cover. There is not going to be an huge difference in price between many of the products as they all use roughly the same amounts. The Onslaught FastCap Spider and Scorpion Insecticide is a newer product that is supposed to give a better/faster knock down and a longer residual. It may be worth it to try this product as it will give you a few more gallons of solution than the Cy Kick and you may have to spray less often.

    Q
Using Bifen as a barrier around house for termites
Using the 4 gallon to 10 liner foot trench method, how long should it last in the soil as a barrier? I already have a full container of Bifen I/T or I would use something else, will this work?
    A
Bifenthrin products used to be considered a good form of termite treatment, but bifenthrin acts as a repellent and now a days almost all professional termite companies are using non-repellents, such as Termidor SC or Dominion 2L.  Termidor will last 10+ years in the soill and Dominion will last 5-7 years.  We have a great article called How To Do A Termite Treatment that explains how to perform a treatment using a non-repellent termiticide.

    Q
What do I need to rid my home of ants and spiders?
    A
We would recommend our Complete Ant Kit because it fills the dietary needs of most species of household ants providing effective ant control indoors and out and Bifen IT as a general insecticide spray that is tough on ants and spiders. Be sure to keep bait and spray completely separate to prevent contaminating the bait. Place the bait stations along ant trails and close to ant activity and spray along baseboards window frames, door frames, corners of the rooms, and around the perimeter of your home spraying 2 feet up the side and spraying 2 feet out on the ground all the way around your home.

    Q
In live in So CA. Huge spider problem. What's the best indoor/outdoor product available?
    Daddy long leg spiders.
    A
We would recommend using Bifen IT for treating indoors and outdoors. Bifen IT is a great general all purpose insecticide that can be used as a perimter treatment on the outside of home (windows, doors, foundation, yard, trees, bushes) and inside as a crack and crevice spray. You will get a 30 day residual on the outside of the home and 90 residual on the inside of home.

    Q
Do you have anything for mosquitoes and flies?
Backyard patio and yard appx. 75 ft. x 80 ft.
    A
Bifen IT would be a great choice to treat mosquitoes and flies. It dries clear and is odorless. You can apply the mixed solution to lawns, trees, shrubs, indoors. It has a long lasting residual. You may want to retreat during the season once every 30 days.
Be sure to spray the undersides of leaves on trees as bushes as this is where mosquitoes like to hang out during the heat of the day.

    Q
What product do you recommend for long lasting residential mosquito control using a mist blower?
    A
Bifen IT is our most popular choice for mosquito control that can be used in a mist blower.  You would apply once a month.  The most important thing to remember when treating for mosquitoes is that they hang out on the underside of leaves and shrubs.  You should treat all shrubs, bushes and trees around the outside patio or wherever you hang out at around the house.  You should also treat the tree line in your yard near the forest if one exists.  Remember to not only treat the main bush or shrub but also the underside of the leaves.

    Q
How do I treat red flying ants outside the home?
Once a year I get thousands of red flying ants (winged and un-winged) outside the home around my deck usually in September. I feel fairly confident they are not termites as they have three bodies instead of two. Which product do you recommend I use in a sprayer? Thanks for assistance.
    A
Bifen It would be a great option for a general pest control spray around the home regularly to kill the ants when they swarm and emerge, as well as any other insects in the area. You would mix it at the rate of 1oz per gallon of water and spray it around the foundation, lawn, bushes, trees, eaves and edges of the home, window and door frames, etc. Bifen It will hold up to the outdoor elements roughly 30-60 days.

  • Asked by Dorothy from Pinola, Ms 39149
    09/11/2014
    Q
How do you kill outdoor ants, common ants and fire ants using Bifen IT?
    A

Bifen IT is an excellent insecticide and is labeled for ants, including fire ants.

The best control will be achieved by using broadcast treatments in combination with mound drenches. This will control present colonies along with foraging workers and newly mated fly-in queens. It is critical either to use high volume treatments or to irrigate prior to application if the soil is dry. Apply 1 fl. oz. per 1,000 square feet when using broadcast treatments. For mound drenches, dilute 1 teaspoon of Bifen I/T per gallon
of water and use 1 to 2 gallons of finished dilution using sufficient force to penetrate the top and allow dilution to flood ant channels. Treat a four-foot diameter around each ant mound. Application should be made in late evening or early morning when it is cooler (65-80° when insects are most active. NOTE: A spray rig calibrated to apply 1 fluid oz. per 1,000 square feet of Bifen I/T in 5 gallons per 1,000 square feet contains the equivalent
dilution (1 teaspoon per gallon) required for fire ant mound drenches in the spray tank.
For other ants, we would recommend a perimeter treatment around your home. You will use 1 fl. oz. per gallon of water.
Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
