The strips work well but not perfectly. They work best in the sunshine as the key is light reflection. I have now purchased Bird-B-Gone to spread over the strips as well. Strips have reduced visits by the doves with fewer droppings. But this has not gotten rid of them entirely. I wrapped the strips around the fire escape railing. Strips are pretty for me to look at as well. A good first step. 2" is good, I would not recommend any thinner.

I bought this to repel woodpeckers. I used it along with repellent gel to which I stuck the strips. No woodpeckers have returned since I used the material about 2 weeks ago.
