Can Boracare be sprayed in a garage?
Planning to spray the raw wood in our garage but we have appliances and stuff that can't be removed like washer and dryer, garage door and opener, and water heater. Can we still spray if we cover them with tarp? What's the effect to metal and electrical wiring? Thanks.
    A

Yes, Boracare can be applied in your garage.  It will not affect metal or wiring.

    Q
I'm planning on hanging live edge green hemlock in my home. Can Bora-Care be applied to green wood?
Recommendations on this project? Hemlock is widely used in my area and a bear to work with when hard.
    A

Yes. Bora-Care can be applied to new, green wood.  Just keep in mind that the dry time may take longer than older, seasoned wood since the green wood contains more moisture than seasoned wood.

    Q
Is there a dry spray for killing wood eating beetles?
We think we have beetles in our attic space. It is a narrow space and will have to reach up through ceiling to spray. We don`t want to add moisture to the area so would need a dryer type of spray.
    A

We are not aware of any such product.  For active wood boring beetles we typically recommend Boracare.

    Q
Can I apply Boracare with a fogger?
    A

Boracare is too thick of a product to be used in any type of fogger.  It can be foamed into wall voids or sprayed or painted directly onto raw untreated wood.

    Q
If Boracare is a repellant, why would they eat it?
Would they not just move on to untreated wood? I would also like to know if I can pour Termidor around the base of a tree that has termites in dead branches.
    A

Bora-Care is not repellent, it is a wood preservative that insects ingest while feeding on treated wood.  It is used to protect wood from infestations or treat active infestations.  Termidor cannot be used to treat soil around a tree it can only be used adjacent to a structure.

Termites do not attack live, healthy trees. If the tree has been damaged by termites it would be advisable to remove the tree and perform a liquid termite soil treatment around the home with Termidor SC to ensure subterranean termites to not find a food source inside of your home. Please take a few minutes to read our article How to Perform a Termite Treatment which will explain how to do the treatment in laymens terms and also explain any needed equipment. Most folks find that they only need a 5 gallon bucket and perhaps a drill in some situations. You should follow the Termidor product label and you should mix Termidor with water as specified.

    Q
Is Bora-Care compatible with ice & water shield materials?
I plan to use Bora-Care to resolve wood rot problems adjacent to roof materials which include an ice & water shield which adheres to the roof but would also be exposed in some areas to the bora care treatment
    A

Apply Bora-Care solutions only to bare wood, plywood, particleboard and other cellulosic materials where an intact water-repellent barrier, such as paint, stain or sealer, is not present.  It should not harm other materials though we would recommend you contact Nisus, the manufacturer at 800-264-0870 to confirm.

    Q
My new installation stained oak floor is showing signs of wood boring beetles. Will Bora Care work?
    A

You cannot apply Boracare to wood floors that are stained, sealed, or painted. The floor would have to be raw wood for you to apply Boracare. You can carefully spot treat existing holes using Jecta, which is a ready-to-use version of Boracare.

    Q
Can Thompsons Water Seal be applied over Bora-Care?
    A

Yes.  Once Boracare is applied, it is recommended that you wait at least three days for the product to dry and soak through the entire piece of wood and then seal.

    Q
I am treating a newly constructed residential home with Bora-Care. My question is: If there are 2 x 8 studs throughout the home how much more Boracare would I use? I am using a 1 to 1 ratio.
    A

For prevention Bora-Care would be applied at the 5:1 ratio.  There is a chart here that can help determine how much is needed.  For 2x8 a 1:1 ratio will cover 308 lineal feet so at the 5:1 it would be 5 times that.  For new homes you typically only apply 2 feet up from ground.

    Q
Can I treat a 25X40 foot dry dock with active termites, with Bora-Care?
It is now a dry dock, the lake water won't be back until 2021. How much do I need and should I spray on top side and down the support post and maybe even the underside of flooring. Just discovered when replacing one of the dock boards. I didn't think pressure treated wood would have this problem.
    A

We apologie but since Bora-Care is not labeled to be used near water (even if not there now) we really cannot advise on this use.  We would recommend that you contact Nisus directly at 800-264-0870

    Q
Can I apply Bora Care to an unfinished wood slab that I plan to varnish?
    A

Bora-Care would be the perfect product to apply for defense against wood boring pests in your situation.  It should be applied to all sides of the wood, and once dry, you can paint or stain over it.

  • Asked by Tim from Holden, Ma

    Q
Building a house, and would like to apply the Bora-Care to lumber prior, during construction. How long will the Bora-Care last in the wood?
    A

When applying Bora-Care to structural wood in the home, you only need to apply the product once. It will last for the life of the wood. If you are applying to exterior wood like a deck, porch, or fence which is exposed to rainfall, then you would either need to use a water sealant after the Boracare is dry, or you would re-apply Boracare after about 3-5 years.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be applied to stained or painted wood?
I have powder post beetles and/or boring beetles coming out of the board and bat siding of my home. The wood is stained, but hasn't been refinished in about 15 years. Will the Bora-Care absorb into wood that has already been stained or painted?
    A

No, Bora-Care can only be used on raw, untreated, unsealed wood. If you are trying to treat wood that is already stained or sealed, you either have to sand the finish off completely or your only other option is to drill holes in the areas that you see damaged and inject the Bora-Care directly into the wood; bypassing the stained layer.

  • Asked by Paul from Sneedville, Tn
    08/01/2019
    Q
Can I add a mold killer/treatment to Bora-Care so that I can treat a mold and termite issue?
    A

The idea when actively treating for mold and wood boring pests is to treat the termites first with Bora-Care at a 1:1 ratio and then come behind that and treat with Bora-Care with Mold Care at the 1:5 ratio. Per the manufacturer, this can be done in back to back days.

    Q
Will applying Bora-Care to just the exposed face of a wall paneled with palletwood be fine?
Or do I have to apply it to both sides of the wood for it to prevent termites?
    A

Bora-Care penetrates faster when applied to all sides and you get a more complete application, but if you can only apply to one side it can still penetrate up to 4 inches with 1 application.

  • Asked by Lynn from Spring Hill, Fl
    07/20/2019
    Q
Once I treat with Boracare, how will I know if the termites are gone?
    A

You can tap wood along the walls, baseboards and windowsills every few inches with a screwdriver handle. Damaged wood will sound hollow and, if the area is extremely damaged, the handle may break the wood's surface. If the area is active, you may see worker termites inside. Bora-Care will take up to 30 days or more to penetrate all the way through the wood and eliminate a drywood termite colony in the wood.

    Q
What can I use for treatment of wood rot on roof rafters?
    A

Bora-Care would be the best product to apply to the raw wood. It will penetrate at least 4 inches into the wood and last the lifetime of the wood. Dilute at a 1:1 ratio.

  • Asked by Wayland from Ridgeway,va

    Q
I have some old lumber with suspect holes in it. Can I use Boracare to treat it, and if so, will the lumber be safe to use for indoor furniture and trim?
I read that some people add Bifen IT to the Bora Care. What additional effect would this add? Thanks
    A

Boracare can be used to treat any raw, untreated wood for wood-infesting pests.  After application it will be absorbed into the wood and remain active for the life of the wood.  It is safe for indoor use if used as directed on the product label.  It cannot be mixed with any other insecticides.
