Can Orthene be used on staghorn and footed ferns without causing damage?

I have fern scale on staghorns and footed ferns. Can Orthene 97 be used without causing damage to ferns? Also, how to mix? How much/gallon of water? Thank you.

Answer:

Orthene 97 Spray Insecticide is NOT specifically labeled for scale on staghorn ferns. We recommend that you contact your local cooperative extension office for a recommendation. They can determine if the fern has scale or fungus. Excessive moisture and poor air circulation could also play a part in the planted areas and they will determine if this is also a factor. Most scale treatments for staghorn fern applications will be the use of horticultural oils and/or insecticidal soaps.
