Can I use Casoron 4G Herbicide in the lawn to prevent Red Oak Acorns from germinating?

I want to treat my lawn with a pre emergent that will have an affect on the overwhelming number of acorn tree sprouts that fall from my Red Oak. I have had some success using 2,4-D herbicide Weed B Gone products but looking for long term control to where I apply once or twice a year.

Answer:

Casoron 4G Herbicide is not labeled for use in lawns and could possibly injure the turfgrass if applied. We are not aware of a pre-emergent herbcide that would prevent acorns from germinating due to oak trees also grow sprouts from the roots. Our recommendation for control would be to cut them off as close to the tree as possiblle at all and there is not a product we are aware of that can be applied to prevent them.  You can contact an local arborist or the Master Gardener with the Cooperative Extension Office for recommendations on any control methods they have found successful for your treatment.
