Yes, it is possible to apply too much lime such as Soil Doctor Pelletized Lawn Lime to the lawn in which you may notice yellowing of the turf. Also, too much lime runs the risk of raising the pH level from a low level that is acidic up to a high level which would be alkaline and therefore the soil will not be able access to iron, potassium, and nitrogen it needs. Even lacking one of these nutrients can cause the lawn to yellow.
To correct over applications of lime, it is recommended to do a pH test of your lawn to get the pH level. The ideal pH level for growing grass is between 6.5 and 7. If the pH of the lawn is too high, do not apply anything for 4-8 weeks and keep watering the lawn. Using ammonium sulfate such as Hi-Yield Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0to lower the pH can be used to lower pH levels in alkaline soils.
We also suggest contacting the Master Gardener with the county Cooperative Extension Office to also assist you with rate levels and best timing of applications for your region.
