Dehumidifiers

Many pests, including millipedes and silverfish, are attracted to moisture inside the home. Dehumidifiers help regulate moisture levels in homes and can be used in basements, crawl spaces, and attics. They can also be used to reduce mildew and mold and are effective after flooding.

Excess Moisture: How A Damp Environment Affects Your Home

As a homeowner, it’s important to know just how excess moisture can affect your home and your family.

  • Excess moisture in your home, especially in the crawl space or basement, facilitates the growth of mold and mildew.
  •  Mold and mildew can damage floor joists, beams, and insulation, and the excess moisture can interfere or damage electrical and mechanical systems in your home.
  • Mold and mildew growth can be very dangerous if growing in excess, especially in a crawl space where the damage is hard to see or detect. A lot of the air we breathe in our home comes from a crawl space or basement, and breathing in this contaminated air can make you and your family ill.
  • Some of the most common household pests, like cockroaches, centipedes, silverfish, pantry pests, wood-boring beetles, termites, and rodents, as well as a host of other pests, thrive in damp environments and require damp wood or moist areas to live. Damp, moist areas in your home attract these insects to your home and can help sustain them, even when other control measures have been taken.

Using Dehumidifiers In Your Home

Modern construction techniques and materials are designed to help protect your home from moisture. However, if not done properly or in older homes, moisture control can become a problem. Once you have pinpointed the areas in your home that are damp, the next step is to reduce the moisture. Dehumidifiers can make this process easy, especially with the variety of units we offer. Here’s how a dehumidifier can improve your home.

  • Basement dehumidifiers will keep the damp conditions at bay, making what is likely the dampest area in your home inhospitable to moisture-loving insects like centipedes.
  • Crawl space dehumidifiers come in to play most in crawl space encapsulation. Crawl space encapsulation is taking your fiberglass-insulated and vented crawl space and turning it into conditioned space, meaning it is completely sealed with a vapor barrier and foam insulation. Adding a dehumidifier to the mix means any moisture that may get into your newly sealed crawl space will be removed.

Once you install a dehumidifier in your home, you can control the humidity in your home so it remains at optimal levels. This will help in general pest control. Cockroaches and pantry pests, common kitchen pests, love moist conditions. Taking that away is just one more step closer to creating an inhospitable place for insects.
