    XLR8 works GREAT

    By Will on 09/13/2014

I mixed per the instructions (1-1/2 oz per gallon for my use), sprayed an area, and one week later - amazing. MUCH better than anything you can buy "over the counter".

    Killer Crabgrass Killer!

    By George on 07/05/2019

The past several summers, crab grass has invaded my bermuda lawn. I tried several national brand crabgrass herbicides from a home improvement store. Quite expensive and produced zero results. This year I tried Drive XLR8 and Prime Source Duo Stick. I mixed 1 1/2 oz herbicide to 1 gallon water +added stick in a tank sprayer. I sprayed the entire lawn. Within a week, all of the existing crabgrass had died. I will need to do a spot application in a few areas that new growth has appeared. 64 oz jug was about $60 or $1.42 per mixed gallon. Works and less expensive than worthless national brands.

    crabgrass slayer

    By Shane on 05/19/2018

mixing suggestion...I spray 1000 sf with about 2 gallons in a pump sprayer. That gives a mix ratio of about 0.725 oz (1.45 Tbsp) per gallon. The spot spray recommendation of 3Tbsp per gallon is a little too strong and will turn surrounding Bermuda grass yellow.

    Not happy

    By Grace on 08/29/2017

I mixed 3 tbsp of XLR8 with 1 gallon of water and sprayed to crabgrass area. After 14 days of waiting, crabgrass looks healthy and green. Don't buy this product.

    Works Great!

    By Mike on 08/05/2016

I have not found anything that works better than this product. I mix 1-1/2 oz per gallon of water (6 oz per 4 gallon back pack sprayer) and just spot treat. Takes about 2-3 days before you see yellowing. I spray the crabgrass when it's a little longer and wait at least three days before I mow or water. Also helps if the grass is getting good water before you apply. Doesn't work as well when the grass is so dry/brown. Crabgrass comes in stages so multiple spot treatments work the best for me.

    Works great!

    By Doug on 08/15/2017

I have had a yard full of crab grass and tried many other products and Drive knocked the crap out of it in 3 days. I was thrilled with the results and highly recommend. As others stated the mixing formulation is very unclear. I used a 1/2 gallon in a 40 gallon sprayer on an acre and it seemed to be about right. I just ordered a second bottle to do some spot spraying where I missed...Good stuff.

    Effective but spotty

    By Johnson on 08/19/2015

Recently used Drive xlr8 with dyneamic surfactant on later stage crabgrass 5-6+ tillers. with a hand sprayer at the recommended rate of 1 1/2 oz per gallon. Tried to be sure product was well mixed and applied evenly but found very erractic results. Some plants taken out completely others unphased by the product.Have used the granular drive in the past with good consistent results.

    Very Effective

    By Steve on 09/04/2020

Very selective and effective! Crabgrass had taken over but after treating it I'm left with the grass I want before I aerate and overseed. Tip: to Measure 3 oz for a 2 gallon spreader, I cut bottom 1/4 off from a 12oz can that worked well for me.

    Bye Bye Crabgrass

    By David on 09/11/2016

The product works great. I followed the instructions on the label and the crabgrass started to die 2 days later. I "spot treated" and used 1 oz per gallon in a backpack sprayer and added the recommended amount of the suggested surfactant.

    By Bud on 08/28/2018

This product worked to perfection in killing off a stubborn infestation of crabgrass in my kentucky blue lawn. Mixed with DyneAmic Surfactant in a gallon handpump sprayer crab was dead in two days after application. 30 gallons overall. Had a heavy rain storm the third day after application which washed away dead crab and lawn is looking normal. Approximately 3/4 acre of lawn.

    DRIVE xlr8

    By Dave on 09/29/2018

Mixed 64 oz. per 55 gallons of water plus 75 oz. of 2 ,4,D killed basically all crabgrass and most chickweed and broadleaves. I used 3 55 gallons sprayers for right at 2 1/2 acres. Very satisfy with the results. I noticed a yellowing of the crab grass about 24 to 30 hours later completely dead on the fourth day. Would have already plugged and sown grass seeds and fertilizer but it started raining.

    No More Crabgrass!!!

    By Scottie on 08/29/2015

I sprayed my one acre yard, that was severely infested with crabgrass, white clover and chickweed, with Drive XLR8 herbicide. I used 1/2 gallon to a 15 gallon sprayer and mixed in some surfactant to insure a the product would work as described. It took two 15 gallon sprayers full to do the job. Within a couple of days the crabgrass was showing extreme stress. Within a one to two week period all of my crabgrass was completely dead. The broad leaf weeds were dead within 48 hours. The chickweed and white clover took about a one to two week period to die. But, they're all officially dead. Nothing but the fine fescue turf grass left. So, this stuff really works well!!!

    Doesn't kill as advertised.

    By Jerry on 07/03/2020

    Verified Purchase

This is crap. This is not working as advertised. I mixed 4 tbsp to 1 gallon, with surfactant, sprayed crabgrass, fully coated. Next day, Nothing!. Absolutely, Nothing! At least Roundup will have a notable difference within 24-26 hours. Waste of time and money. Can't return due to I opened the container, but buyer beware. I will update this review if I need to, but as of today, I don't see a reason to.

    Weed Wars

    By Jd on 06/24/2018

Just finished my second treatment. I had thick crabgrass completely take over my side yard (on 2 acres). The first treatment got about 30% of it. The second treatment looks to be working better after adding the surfactant and going slower with 30gal tow spray rig. My biggest problem is not being able to buy this stuff in bulk. I need 2.5 gal jugs, not this little apple juice box. At 1.5 oz per gallon, I make 45 gallons. Empty!!! Gotta buy more.

    Works Fast

    By Manny on 08/16/2016

I spot applied Drive XLR8 with my backpack sprayer at a rate of 1.5oz per gallon along with .5oz surfactant per gallon. I was amazed at how quickly the crabgrass started to die. This works very well for crabgrass.

    Crabgrass Killer #1

    By Joshua on 09/10/2021

Wow!! I recently purchased a house and have been slowly reclaiming the yard from the wild. I used Scott's weed and feed to get rid of most of the misc. weeds and clover, only to have crabgrass start creeping in all summer long till almost half the yard had become infested with it. Planning for the future, I decided to plant some Zoysia plugs but wanted to make sure that the crabgrass wouldn't hinder their growth. So I asked a rep at DoMyOwn for their recommendation on a post-emergent crabgrass killer that I could apply now that wouldn't hurt my new plugs and this was it. Read all the directions, followed them to a 't' and a few days later almost all of the crabgrass is dead. (Approx. 90%) All of the good fescue, new Zoysia etc... are doing great. Can't believe how easy it was. Thank you for the expert advice DoMyOwn! :)

    It works!

    By Mike on 08/15/2015

Crabgrass was choking out my newly seeded yard. I mixed a half gallon of Drive xlr8 with 20 gallons of water and a pint of seed oil surfactant per acre and 3 days later the crabgrass started turning yellow. By the tenth day 90% of it was dead or dying. 3 weeks later some of the crabgrass is trying to rally but I'm sure a second application would cure that. And the rye, bluegrass and fescue was virtually unharmed and is now the dominant growth in the yard.

    Out standing product

    By Rick on 09/06/2015

I have tried all of the stuff from lowes and Home Depot and nothing killed the grab grass while it was growing. Drive xlr8 killed it all to the root in one application. Took about 7 days. I mixed it 75/25 with a surfactant and set the sprayer to 2oz per gallon. Used a gallon to do an acre. Kind of high priced but better then wasting your money on other products.

Crabgrass et al and Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass

    By Greg on 08/09/2016

I wanted to kill the new crabgrass that has emerged in Mid-summer, even with a properly timed pre emergent treatment of Surflan at 1 gallon an acre rate sprayed between April 2 -3. At the correct time for pre emergent application and rate, I still received crabgrass sprouting in late June. I purchase Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass, Dismiss, and Gordon's Trimec 992, plus, the recommended surface adhering adjuvant -mentholated seed oil. With 10 acres of grass, I have to find a cheaper way to create my own Gordon's Q4; it only costs a $100 an gallon/acre vs $123 gallon/acre Q4 premixed. It seems that when following all the spraying prerequisites; applying 2 days after mowing, watering before and a day after treatment, with temperatures in the low 80s, and mowing a week later. Yet, I only received 60 -70 % kill of crabgrass after 10 days. This Q4 cocktail did kill all the other broad leaf and nutsedge weeds, but truly $adden by results. I don't know if Drive only kills crabgrass at the very beginning of growth phase up to 4 tiller stage? Once the new crabgrass has been mowed, who really knows it's growth stage? However, I did notice that areas that where the lawn tractor tire pressed down the grass, there was almost +95 % kill rate in those strips. This suggests that dragging a chained plastic pipe behind the 14 ' boom sprayer may cause the same phenomenon I experienced. However, what a mess to tow and not get caught up on something when spraying 10 acres. Hypothesis, the mechanical stress damage to the plant's cuticle might allow a lethal dose of Drive's ingredient, Quinclorac, into the crabgrass. Note: this same tire track treatment did not hurt any cool weather or Kentucky Bluegrass at all; all the cultivated grass stayed very robust and green. Bottom Line: More work needs to be done by the manufacturer, BASF, to enhance their products success rate with Crabgrass et al.

    excellent product

    By Tom on 04/21/2014

The product is excellent. Did a great job killing crab grass. what was difficult was getting a "reasonable" explanation on what the mixture should be. At least a recommended mixture per gallon of mix.

    Didn't work for me

    By John on 04/28/2023

First, the instructions give you application rates per 1,000 square feet. I'm doing spot spraying and I need to know ounces per gallon in the sprayer. I guessed to the high side, and hit some large plants. Virtually no impact.

    Expert Response  Expert response:
We apologize you did not achieve the intended results. Drive works best on young newly emerged weeds, more mature weeds may require repeat application. Drive also requires the use of an MSO surfactant for best results. We would welcome the opportunity to troubleshoot the application to help get you the results you need.
