    Q
How often can apply the spray to my tree
    A
Fertilome Tree & Shrub Insect Drench is applied as a soil drench so that it moves down through the soil, where it is absorbed by the roots of the plant or tree, not as a foliar spray. When using Fertilome Tree and Shrub you should treat mid-fall and again in the spring with a a soil drench. You may need to moisten the ground prior to the treatment, use the higher volume of water as recommended on the label and keep the soil moist for the following 14 days after the treatment to encourage the tree to trans-locate the product.

    Q
Do you have a systemic insecticide that can be used on Pecan trees for boring beetles?
Boring beetles are infesting pecan and other trees in the Southeast. I would like to find a poison to inject into the ground around the tree drip line, so the roots would absorb it and take it up through the limb cambian layer and kill the borer larva. I believe the Imidacloprid will do the job. Websites in Texas advertise a service to do this, but they are secretive about the product. I do have an applicator's permit.
    A
We believe the product you are looking for is the Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic. This product contains Imidacloprid and is labeled for boring beetles on pecan trees.

It's first of August. Ok to treat for Emerald ash borer now?
I have your fertilome tree and shrub drench which I plan on using for my green ash trees to prevent emerald ash borer problems. 1) It is the 1st of August and we are in a drought. Is now a good time to apply? If not when should I apply? 2) I noticed that you no longer recommend Fertilome drench for emerald ash borer. Is that correct?
    A

When using Fertilome Tree and Shrub you should treat mid-fall and again in the spring with a a soil drench. You may need to moisten the ground prior to the treatment, use the higher volume of water as recommended on the label and keep the soil moist for the following 14 days after the treatment to encourage the tree to trans-locate the product. We are not sure where you saw that we do not recommend Fertilome drench for EAB but we think it is a fine product for this pest.

    Q
How do you determine the amount of Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench to be used on crepe myrtle? The tree has multiple trunks, so are all trunks of the tree taken in to consideration?
    A

Yes, if you are applying Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench to a tree with more thank one trunk, you will measure the distance around each and then add those measurements together.  The instructions from the product label for applying to a tree with more than one trunk are below.

TREES WITH 2 OR MORE TRUNKS: Measure the distance (in inches) around each tree trunk and add together. Multiply this total by 0.75 to get the required number of ounces of this product to apply. Example: A tree has 4 trunks. They measure 20, 10, 5 and 5 [inches] or a total of 40 [inches], 40 X 0.75 = 30 ounces.

    Q
Is this appropriate to treat the new crape myrtle scale/pest?
There is a fairly new pest that is attacking and killing crape myrtles, eriococcus scale. Will this product protect my crape myrtles?
    A
Fertilome Tree & Shrub Insect Drench would be a good choice for scale protection.  Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil. It is also important to keep the soil around the tree or shrub moist for the next 7-10 days after applications to encourage uptake.

    Q
    nipple gaul treatment
I have treated a large hackberry tree (trunk circumference about 100 inches) with a gallon of Fertilome tree and shrub insect drench last June and then again late this March. The leaves are once again showing the small pods of the nipple gaul on the back of the leaf. Am I using enough of the product ? Should I treat it again this spring? I do not want to damage the tree but the infestation is rather troublesome since it caused significant early leaf dropping as early as mid July into August. By early Sept the tree is almost bare. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
    A
You would need to use 1 oz. of Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic per inch of trunk circumference mixed with at least 10 gallons of water and poured around the base of the tree trunk. It is best to keep the treated area moist for the first 7 days following the application. Treating Hackberry Gall Psyllid with a systemic insecticide to kill psyllids when they feed would be ideal, but this approach means planning ahead because systemics take a few weeks to translocate through the vein system. During the summer, psyllids are protected inside the gall from insecticides sprayed on the leaves so foliar treatments won't be effective then. For best results you would need to treat trees in the spring to kill newly hatched nymphs before the onset of gall formation and again in the fall while treating an active infestation. Repeat annual applications once control is gained is highly recommended as a preventative.
