  • Asked by Holly from Boston, Ma

    Q
What's good for crabapples with fungus?
I have an old red-flowering crabapple that gets leaf fungus (black spots, then yellowing or bright orange coloring, then leaves dropping). I also have a juneberry tree that gets cedar rust. What is the best product or products to use, and what's the least toxic (realizing that these may be two different products). Thank you!
    A

Fung-onil Multi Purpose Fungicide Concentrate is a great product for ornamental trees and shrubs for a variety of fungal diseases, including leaf spot and rust. If you plan to eat the fruit from the crabapple tree, then we would recommend Bonide Liquid Copper Fungicide. For more details on an exact recommendation for your trees, we suggest contacting an arborist or Master Gardener in your area.

  • Asked by Elizabeth from St. Louis, Mo
    11/27/2017
    Q
How much Fung-onil Multi Purpose Fungicide Concentrate should I spray per holly shrub with volutella?
I have 351 sq ft bed with volutella on the holly shrubs, but shrubs don't fill entire 351 sq ft area. The shrubs vary in size from 4×3×3 feet being the largest size, to 1×1×1 ft, the smallest size.
    A

Per the Fung-Onil product label for controlling volutella leaf blight: Apply this product at a rate of 2 ¼ teaspoons per gallon, or 3 Tablespoons (1 ½ fluid ounces) per 4 gallons of water.  Apply enough diluted spray per acre to provide thorough coverage of all plant parts that are intended to be protected from disease, generally ranging from ½ to 3 gallons per 1,000 square feet of garden area. Repeat applications at 7 to 14 day intervals until conditions are no longer favorable for disease. During periods when conditions favor severe disease incidence, generally cloudy or wet weather, apply this product at 7 day intervals. There is a great article by Cornell University here.  It does state heavily infected plants should be removed and destroyed.

  • Asked by Lee from West Yellowstone, Montana
    04/25/2021
    Q
When should I treat my conifer for needle-rust with Fung-onil? When it starts to put out new growth or before?
    A

The timing to stop needlecast from occurring on trees is tricky sometimes but its important to try and be as accurate as you can. Optimal conditions for needlecast are during times of excess moisture and humidity.  This disease is common in the spring but can also happen during other times of the year if the conditions for the disease to thrive are favorable. We have linked an article below that is extremely informative on needlecast and how/when to treat for it, and the best management practices to help keep the trees healthy and from being re-infected by spores each year. The excert from the article below refers specifically to growing stages for when the Fung-onil Multi Purpose Fungicide should be applied.

    Iowa Extension Article
When all other management is not enough, fungicides can be used to help manage rhizosphaera needle cast. Precise timing is necessary for this method to help, since protection of new growth is the motivation for spraying. Due to the variability of typical spring weather from year to year, it is better to time sprays by observing the new growth. When needle length of the new growth is roughly half the size of old growth, the first spray should be applied. A second spray should then be applied 3-4 weeks later. Sprays may need to be made for 2-3 consecutive years depending on severity. Products containing chlorothalonil or other active ingredients listed for rhizosphaera needle cast can be used for treatment. Remember to always follow the instructions on product labeling.
