Chris from Columbia Mo writes

Gaps in wood paneling are filled with mud/sawdust mixture. What pest is it?

I have a 20x30 wood frame building on wood posts with crawl space, built as a small store originally. Two wood posts come up in the center of the single large room and are covered with rough sawn cedar. The gaps around this sheathing on one post are stuffed with a hardened mixture the color of the local clay soil apparently mixed with sawdust. Is this termites blocking the gaps with mud and sawdust? I will be pulling off the cedar to look inside, just wondering what to inspect. Thanks for any advice.

Answer:

It is very hard to say what pest you may be dealing with just by the description of damage. It could be subterranean termites but it could also be carpenter ants. we recommend you get a free or low cost inspection to help you determine what pest your are dealing with so you can choose the correct treatment method.
