How do I get rid of black beetles in Ohio?

We have black beetles (possibly blister beetles) in our hay for our horse. Ohio, in May? How can we get rid of them and keep them away? Most of the literature we read indicates these bugs should not appear until later in the summer. We are military and just moved to Ohio; plus this is our daughters horse so we are newbies at this.

Answer:

We recommend you call your local cooperative extension office for guidance. We are not familiar with this agricultural pest and because horses will later feed on the hay we are reluctant to make any product recommendations. For more information on blister beetles, contact Bill Lyon, Ohio State University Extension Entomology, (614) 292-5274.
