You can apply pre-emergents in spring and fall prior to weed germination. Timing will need to be adjusted around seeding and overseeding your lawn so that the application does not stop the grass seed from growing. Pre-emergents are not effective after the weeds emerge. You want to get the application applied prior to crabgrass germination which is usually when ground temps are around 50-60 degrees. Keep an eye on the weather, track the soil temperature (when the weather warms consistently) , look for local Forsythia blooms wilting for timing of application. In your state (IL), you will want to apply around the beginning of April. Again, check the weather and soil for more accurate timing as this can vary.
