How long can bird mites live in a home once the nest is removed? We have heard many different answers.

We had birds build a nest in our stove exhaust fan vent and subsequently our home was infested with bird mites.

Answer:

It all depends on the species of bird mite it was.  Northern fowl mite adults may survive up to 3 weeks off their host birds, but chicken mites may survive up to 8 months without a host.  Please read our "How to Get Rid of Bird Mites" article for further recommendations on how to speed up the process of eliminating them
