Gary from Denton, Texas writes

How long can bird mites survive without the host bird?

The nest has been gone for 4 weeks and we continue to spray Talstar and vacuum twice a day. For every one we kill there seems to be 10 more. We are about ready to leave our home to escape the biting.

Answer:

This is a very hard question to answer as not a lot of research has been done on the subject. Most experts say that the bord mites can not last longer than 30-60 days without an avian host though there are many variables which can change this number. Sorry we could not offer a more definitive answer.
