Hi I'm James from Domyownpestcontrol.com and I'm filming from our product warehouse to talk about how to get rid of fire ants. Fire ants are the scourges of the south. These ants can ruin family picnics and any other outdoor activities during the summer. Fire ants have been invading southern yards and homes for so long that most people have become resigned to living with these pests. We are going to teach you how to get rid of fire ants in your yard. One of the best ways to kill fire ants in your yard is by using fire ant baits. Fire ant baits will be picked up and carried back to the colony by the foraging ants which will result in fire ant colony elimination over the next several weeks. When dealing with a yard that is infested with fire ants we recommend using a product that is specifically labeled for fire ant control, such as Advion fire ant bait or Extinguish Plus. Baiting can only be done when fire ants are actively foraging for food. Here is a quick tip to see if fire ants are actually foraging. Simply drop a potato chip near the mound and check it after an hour or two to see if the ants are attracted to the chip; if they are, it's time to bait. While individual mound applications can be done, fire ant bait should be broadcasted over the entire infested areas for the most effective treatment. You can broadcast the fire ant bait by using a hand spreader in your yard. Results will be seen over the next few weeks. If you have an event coming up within a few days and you need to control fire ant mounds in the area right away, we recommend using a liquid drench treatment. Step 1: we recommend performing mound drench treatments in early morning or late evening hours when the fire ants are less active. You should select a liquid concentrate that is labeled for fire ant mound drenches and dilute as directed on the product label. You will need a hand pump sprayer or watering can and a large bucket for this treatment. We recommend preparing 1-3 gallons of finished solution depending on the size of the mound. Step 2: if the soil is not moist then it is important to moisten it a bit before the treatment so that the drench will soak into the soil and not just run off the top. Step 3: use a hand pump sprayer or sprinkling can to apply the solution to the mound until it's wet. You should also apply the dilution to about a 3' radius around the mound. Step 4: use a broomstick handle or other dowel to poke down the apex of the mound and quickly poor in about 1-2 gallons of the diluted solution. Please note that the ants can take several hours to die so poor in the solution and move away from the area quickly. By using these fire ant treatment methods in your yard, you can finally have the fire ant free yard you've always wanted.
