I've had catch and release traps before and they end up being messy sometimes. After I cleaned them with just dawn and not water they were no longer effective.
The Ketch-All Humane Live Multi Catch Mouse Trap with Clear Lid has a full product use sheet on the product page that goes over setting up, cleaning, monitoring, etc the traps in great detail. You can see the document on the product page or click on the Ketch All Instructions here. It is typically not recommended to wash the traps like you referenced as you are removing other rodent scents, pheromones, pee, etc that they may leave behind that would let other rodents know they have come there already. It is much harder to get rodents to enter traps that are sterile and new without any comfort smells to indicate safety when entering it. A bottle brush to clean out any loose debris and scrape things off the surface is the main tool suggested in the instruction guide.
