I use this with peanut butter as the bait. (Mix it in a zip lock quart bag). Works GREAT for the target animal, no worry about the cat drinking the water.

This product work well if fresh. After 48 hours most of the rats were gone. After a week, a second application of fresh product was needed to finish the job.
