Warren from George, Iowa writes

Our lawn became patch in ther drought last year. I believe that all grass died except bluegrass.

what weed and feed is the best to use to get the bluegrass to spread? it is pretty consistent patches that are about 50% coverage over our whole lawn and just want it to fill in. I fear that if I try to seed and then use weed and feed that I will damage the new seeding. The consistent patches are just inches apart. will it fill in with only weed and feed? We do not have sprinklers and is about 1/2 acre.

Answer:

This is a tough one considering there is no real good solution with the lack of water.  With that being said we would not put any type of herbicide out  at all and just apply a fertilizer only and reseed at a low rate.  Bluegrass does not spread like a Bermuda or St. Augustine, so it is necessary to inter-seed into those bare areas.
