Post Emergent Crabgrass Killer Herbicide

Crabgrass is an annual plant that grows from seed each season, which can make it even harder to control once it starts growing. Since it does come from a seed, you won’t necessarily know where these will sprout up, making pre-emergent control a guessing game. Here are some techniques to use when dealing with crabgrass after it has made its presence known in your yard.

  • Removing the plant by hand pulling can be an effective form of control for small areas. Pull weeds after rain or watering for easier removal.
  • In established lawns, proper lawn care can prevent weed takeover. Correct fertilization and frequent mowing can help to keep your lawn healthy and weeds at bay.
  • Herbicides can be a great option for larger areas, where hand pulling is not feasible. You need to apply post emergent weed killers as soon as new plants emerge. Once plants get larger (more than 3-5 leaves), it will be much more difficult for the products to kill these weeds.
  • You will most likely need to make more than one application, since there could be seeds that have not yet germinated at the time of your first application. Wait about two weeks in between applications.

Post Emergent Crabgrass Products

There are many products available for post emergent crabgrass control. Broad-spectrum products, like glyphosate or some formulated exactly for crabgrass, like Drive XLR8, work well once plants are above ground. With all of these post-emergent products, you must read all instructions and safety warnings before using. When used as directed, these products should be safe for use around turf grass and desirable plants.
