Edible Garden Animal Repellents

Animal repellents use ingredients that affect the senses of the animals, including taste, touch, and scent, often by irritating the nasal passages and mucous membranes and creating an unpleasant sensation and environment for the animals. These ingredients often include one or more of: putrescent egg solids, garlic solids and garlic oil, capsaicin (hot pepper oil), and various essential oils including cinnamon and white pepper. These products do not harm the target pest, but just make it irritating and annoying and not enjoyable.

When applying animal repellents on your edible garden plants, be sure to read the label carefully first, to ensure the product is safe for application on edible plants. These products need to be applied correctly and often, since rain and weather can make them less effective. For best results, use them in conjunction with other animal deterrents, like fencing, mesh, etc.
