    Q
Can Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran be used on Tilia x Mongolia Little Linden?
    A

Per the Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran product label: “Do not apply this product, by any application method, to linden, basswood or other Tilia species.” Due to the sensitive nature of Linden trees, we recommend speaking with the master gardener at your local cooperative extension office to determine what products can safely be applied.

    Q
Can Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran be used as a basal bark spray to treat Magnolia scale?
My magnolia is infested with scale. I've used imidocloprid twice but read that soft scale don't feed deeply enough for that to work well. Just wondering the best product to save this poor tree from scale.

    Q
Can Safari be used for European elm scale and how best to apply to an 80-foot tree?
    A

Safari 20SG insecticide can be applied to treat a variety of soft and armored scale insects, such as European Elm scale, however this application is best done in spring after leaves have expanded. For the crawling stage, it is best to apply a foliar spray of an oil product or a pyrethroid such as Talstar P. This article has more details about the life cycle of this insect.

    Q
How is Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran mixed for drenching for spotted lanternflies?
    A

Unfortunately there are no products known labeled for lanternfly control, including Safari. Spotted Lantern Fly is an invasive pest only found in certain areas of Pennsylvania right now. Penn State Extension has set up an entire website to help track and control this pest. Please visit this site for information on how to report this pest and non-chemical steps recommended:

Further information for homeowners can be found here:

    https://www.agriculture.pa.gov/Plants_Land_Water/PlantIndustry/Entomology/spotted_lanternfly/homeowners/Pages/default.aspx

Some folks are treating trees with dinotefuran, although since these products are not yet labeled for this pest, we cannot be certain as to the efficacy.

    https://www.domyown.com/safari-20sg-systemic-insecticide-with-dinotefuran-p-2512.html

When doing a soil drench with Safari 20SG or any other systemic insecticide, the exact amount of water is not as important as using the correct amount of product. Your water is a carrier for the active ingredient, so you just need to use a sufficient volume of water to mix and apply the insecticide. To treat shrubs, you would use 3 to 6 grams (1.25 - 2.5 level teaspoons) of Safari 20SG per foot of shrub height, using 1-4 pints of water per foot of shrub height or per inch of trunk diameter for trees.

  • Asked by Susan from Mills River. Nc

    Q
Is it really necessary to use mixed Safari within 24 hours of mixing?
I read in one of your answers that the solution must be used within 24 hours, but I do not see that on the label. Can you confirm?
    A

Although most manufacturers do not print a time limit for using mixed product on the label, the general rule of thumb is to use or discard insecticides (including Safari) within 24 hours.  This is because the active ingredient can start to break down after that time and cause the solution to become less effective.  Some insecticides also can damage sprayer parts if left for long periods of time.

    Q
How much of Safari 20 sg shoud use for a drench in potted house plants and orchids?
I have some mandevillas potted in 5 gallon pots that have some mealy bugs. I also have some orchids with it too. I purchase the 12 ounce container of safari 20 sg but there is no instructions on how to use for container plants. Thank you.
    A

If you follow this link and scroll to page 10 of the Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide Product Label , it has a chart and instructions for use in containerized plants. It goes over potted plants by size in inches rather than gallons so you will want to measure your plants and reference the chart for how much solution for your needs. Please let us know if you have any other questions and we would be happy to help.

    Q
Using Safari 20 sg in a drip line irrigation system
I want to treat multiple tropical plants for mealy bugs, using a drip line irrigation system with a 2 gallon feeder. What would be the mix ratio for 100 gallons of water.
    A

Dilution ratios for Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran are normally 1:100 to 1:200, depending on the system. Apply this product only through microirrigation (individual spaghetti tube), drip irrigation, overhead irrigation, or motorized calibrat- ed irrigation equipment per the product label.  This is not a method we are familiar with so apologize but would recommend contacting the manufacturer Valent directly at 800-682-5368 or the manufacturer of the system you are using for further advice.

  • Asked by Allison from Tallahassee, Fl

    Q
I have armored scales on a few cacti planted in a large planter. Can I use Safari 20G and how do I mix it?
Can you tell me how much safari 20sg to mix per gallon of water for a soil drench? Also, my soil is a homemade gritty mixture that allows water to flow right through, so will this product work effectively if it's just wetting the roots thoroughly, but not sitting there? Also have a large cereus peruvianus cactus that I will be using the soil drench on, so I'm assuming it would have the same instructions as the smaller (probably 1 gallon sized) cacti. Is that correct? I read to treat cacti using instructions of ornamentals, but wanted to confirm first.
    A

To eliminate scale on cacti, it is best to remove the scale using cotton swabs dipped in alcohol to remove as many as possible. This article from the Missouri Botanical Garden has great tips on this and on general cactus and succulent care. They recommend using neem or pyrethrin as a contact spray, so we would recommend Triple Action for this application. The rate for Safari 20 SG for containerized plants as a soil media drench is 1.5 – 3 tsp per gallon of water and 2 lf oz of solution per 4 inches of pot diameter. You can see these details on page 10 of the product label. Since the Safari product label does not list cacti or succulents as tested plants and we do not have experience treating these plants, we recommend consulting with a cacti specialist and/or testing a few plants before treating a large area.
