    Q
What is the correct ratio to use for a trunk application of Safari 20 SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran in spruce trees?
I have 6 4 inch diameter spruce trees with a one gallon sprayer. It says to use 12-24 ounces of Safari. Is that 3-6 cups?
    A

Per the product label on the Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran you would use 1.0 - 2.1 ounces per 10 feet of height of the tree. As a soil drench: Mix required does in water and uniformly apply to soil around base of shrub or tree. Pull back mulch before drenching. Apply 1-4 pints of drench solution per foot of inch of trunk diameter of trees. Adjust drench volume based on soil type, soil moisture, and thickness of mulch so that product is moved into root zone. To enhance soil penetration in heavy soils and sloping terrain, dig shallow holes around tree and shrub, and apply drench solution in holes. Lower drench volumes may be less effective in dry soils or when applied over heavy mulch unless there is adequate rainfall or irrigation after application to move product into root zone.

    Q
When should I apply Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran as a trunk spray relative to crawler emergence?
    A

Time applications of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran to coincide with when most vulnerable pest life stage is present on plants (Majority of pests would be Spring time).  Do not apply to wet bark, during rainfall, or if rain is expected within 12 hours. Control may be less effective in trees with thick bark, and at times when trees are not actively growing or transpiring.

    Q
How should I mix Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran so spray for aphids and whiteflies in annuals in hanging baskets?
    A

You will need 1 tsp. of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticde with Dinotefuran per gallon of water to treat for aphids and whitefiles.  However, this product is not labeled for use on residential house plants.  If you have residential outdoor house plants, you would can use a product like Dominion 2L . You would use 0.45 mL per gallon of water for a foliar spray. You can also use Bonide Systemic Granules Insect Control, which is labeled for all houseplants, both indoors and outdoors. You will need to use 2.5 tbsp. per gallon of water.

    Q
Will Safari 20 SG Systemic Insecticde with Dinotefuran kill Palm Leaf Skeletonizer on a infected Reclinata Palm?
If so which method of application do you recommend most effective? FYI: I have tried Imidacloprid root drench multiple times without any success.
    A

Unfortunately, there isn't much research out there done on this type of issue with palm trees, and Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran is not labeled to treat for skeletizer. They are considered leafminers, and it is labeled to treat for that. If an imidacloprid product did not work you could certainly try the Safari to see if it might however, we can't guarantee the results. All that we have read states to cut back the leaves, but nothing regarding an active ingredient that truly combats this issue. You can learn more about this pest here. We recommend contacting your local extension for assistance treating this pest.

    Q
Can Safari 20SG be applied to prevent an infestation of pine bark beetles?
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide is not specifically labeled for pine bark beetles. We normally recommend using a synthetic pyrethroid like Talstar or Permethrin SFR.  The biggest key with this insect is timing to ensure the infestation doesn't get out of hand.  Once a tree is fully infested there isn't much you can do other than chop down the tree and burn it to try and prevent infestation of any neighboring trees.

  • Asked by David from Venice, Fl

    Q
How much Safari should I mix with one gallon of water for soil drench to treat scale on Hibiscus?
I have a Hibiscus tree and three bushes covered with armored scale. I want to do a soil drench and need to know how much Safari granules to mix in a gallon of water for a systemic application.
    A

When doing a soil drench wtih Safari 20SG or any other systemic insecticide, the exact amount of water is not as important as using the correct amount of product. Your water is a carrier for the active ingredient, so you just need to use a sufficient volume of water to mix and apply the insecticide. To treat shrubs, you would use 3 to 6 grams (1.25 - 2.5 level teaspoons) of Safari 20SG per foot of shrub height, using 1-4 pints of water per foot of shrub height or per inch of trunk diameter for trees.

  • Asked by Craig from Williamsport, Pa
    10/31/2016
    Q
What is the best time of year to apply Safari 20 SG as a trunk spray for Hemlock Adelgids in northern PA?
I want to avoid impacting the bees while still being most effective for the trees. Also, would you please confirm the proper mix ratio?
    A

Per page 9 of the Safari 20SG supplemental label for basal trunk spray the rate will vary depending on your dilution rate.  You would use 12 – 24 oz per gallon of water.  Depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65-85” of cumulative trunk diameter.

This article from the Penn State Extension has excellent tips and information about the life cycle of this complex pest. We recommend contacting your County Extension Office for specific timing recommendations.

    Q
Will Safari 20 SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran treat scale in sago palms?
    A

Yes, Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran, a super-systemic insecticide with quick uptake and knockdown, controls a broad spectrum of ferocious and invasive pests, including scale.  The dilution rate for a foliar spray would be 1.0 tsp per gallon of water to cover 200 sq ft. You do not need to trim infested branches unless they are so badly damaged that they cannot recover. We recommend that you speak with the manufacturer of Safari so they can provide additional treatment options and times using their product. • Asked by Mrs from Navarre, Fl
    09/23/2016
    Q
What is the best method to apply Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran to Sago Palms that are infested with scale?
It is September in Florida, what is the best time of day to apply?
    A

Safari 20 SG Insecticide is a systemic product and will be taken up by the root system and translocated upward throughout the plant. When applied as a foliar spray, the product offers translaminar and locally systemic control of foliar pests.

For Armored and Soft Scale and treatment of small areas: Mix 1/2 - 1.0 tsp per gallon. You will want to apply this product when wind drifts are minimal.

Make first application just before pest populations reach an economic threshold. If necessary, make a second application after 14 - 21 days. Tank mixing with a surfactant may improve control of pests such as whitefly, mealybug and scale. Confirm plant safety of tank mix in small area before using on a commercial scale.

  • Asked by Peter from Columbia, Md

    Q
What's the best dosage (drench and foliar) and timing to treat woolly adelgids on an Eastern Hemlock with Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide?
I live in Central Maryland and the Hemlock tree is about 16 feet tall. I've previously used imidacloprid (once) as a drench. Would basal bark spray application of Safari be as effective as drench?
    A

You can apply Safari 20SG as a drench or as a basal trunk spray for woolly adelgids. Most folks will use the trunk spray for ease of application and quick uptake. You can view these instructions on page 8 of the Supplemental Label here. You would use 12 – 24 oz per gallon of water.  Depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65-85” of cumulative trunk diameter. Here is a link to an application video with Safari from the manufacturer that we recommend watching: http://www.valent.com/professional/products/safari/video.cfm

For foliar spray, you would use 1 tsp per gallon of water to cover about 200 square feet.

For the best application timing in your area, we would suggest contacting a Master Gardener.

    Q
Can you help me with control of palmetto scale (comstockeilla sabalis) on a sabal palm?
The scale is winning on my 8 ft florida sabal (not much of a trunk yet). Its under a live oak tree and sprays and other systemics have not work. Texas A&M said try dinotefuran. I have a friend who has same scale on sabal minors. How much does a 12 ounce bottle cost? It appears the scale is in the heart of the palm as gets in between unopen fronds.
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran would be a great product to use for Pamletto Scale. One 12oz bottle is $119.95 and will make approx. 100 gallons of mixed solution.

    Q
How much Safari 20SG do I mix per gallon for bark application against Emerald Ash Borers?
    A

You would use 12 - 24 oz of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran per gallon depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65 - 85” of cumulative trunk diameter (1.5 - 2.0 fl oz per inch of trunk diameter) when applied to trunk between soil surface and 4.5 feet above soil surface. Spray bark on root flare (buttress roots) and on trunk between soil surface and 4-5 feet above the soil surface. Adjust nozzle to uniformly distribute spray over the entire circumference of the tree trunk and buttress roots. Wet bark just to the point of saturation and run off onto soil. Apply ONLY with a low volume sprayer operated at less than 20 PSI to prevent tree damage, bounce back and drift of spray droplets. Time applications to coincide with when most vulnerable pest life stage is present on plants. Do not apply to wet bark, during rainfall or if rain is expected within 12 hours. Control may be less effective in trees with thick bark, and at times when trees are not actively growing or transpiring.

  • Asked by Tommie from Houston, Tx
    06/24/2016
    Q
How much Safari 20SG do I use to treat a 6 - 7 foot azalea bush for white lace azalea bugs?
It is located in a flower bed.
    A

The Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide product label recommends using 1.0 - 2.1 ounces per 10 feet of height. When applied to the soil, Safari 20 SG Insecticide is taken up by actively growing trees and shrubs. Speed of control will be dependent on plant size, plant health, environmental conditions and how actively pests are feeding. In actively growing plants, control may be evident within 1 - 3 weeks after application depending on plant size. Time applications to coincide with when most vulnerable pest life stage is present on plants. Control may be less effective when applied to dry, saturated, or frozen soil, or at times when plants are not actively taking up water from soil. If possible, irrigate dry soils 1 - 3 days before application, or apply irrigation within 3 days after application. Heavy rainfall or inadequate irrigation immediately following application may decrease performance. Use higher labeled rates for broadleaf evergreens with dense foliage (ex. hollies), and with very large trees.  Mix required dose in water and uniformly apply to soil around base of shrub or tree. Pull back mulch before drenching. Apply 1 - 4 pints of drench solution per foot of height (shrubs) or inch of trunk diameter (trees). Adjust drench volume based on soil type, soil moisture and thickness of mulch so that product is moved into root zone. To enhance soil penetration in heavy soils and sloping terrain, dig shallow holes around tree or shrub, and apply drench solution in holes. Lower drench volumes may be less effective in dry soils or when applied over heavy mulch unless there is adequate rainfall or irrigation after application to move product into root zone. Please be sure to read the full Product Label for complete use instructions.
