    Q
How do I apply Safari granules for basal bark treatment?
Assuming the larger container (granules) are more cost effective. What would be the mix of granule per gallon for basal bark treatment of borers.
    A

You can view these instructions on page 8 of the Supplemental Label here. You would use 12 – 24 oz  of Safari 20SG per gallon of water.  Depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65-85” of cumulative trunk diameter.

    Q
How much of Safari 20 sg shoud use for a drench in potted house plants and orchids?
I have some mandevillas potted in 5 gallon pots that have some mealy bugs. I also have some orchids with it too. I purchase the 12 ounce container of safari 20 sg but there is no instructions on how to use for container plants. Thank you.
    A

If you follow this link and scroll to page 10 of the Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide Product Label , it has a chart and instructions for use in containerized plants. It goes over potted plants by size in inches rather than gallons so you will want to measure your plants and reference the chart for how much solution for your needs. Please let us know if you have any other questions and we would be happy to help.

    Q
Is it really necessary to use mixed Safari within 24 hours of mixing?
I read in one of your answers that the solution must be used within 24 hours, but I do not see that on the label. Can you confirm?
    A

Although most manufacturers do not print a time limit for using mixed product on the label, the general rule of thumb is to use or discard insecticides (including Safari) within 24 hours.  This is because the active ingredient can start to break down after that time and cause the solution to become less effective.  Some insecticides also can damage sprayer parts if left for long periods of time.

  • Asked by James from Ephrata, Pa

    Q
How is Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran mixed for drenching for spotted lanternflies?
    A

Unfortunately there are no products known labeled for lanternfly control, including Safari. Spotted Lantern Fly is an invasive pest only found in certain areas of Pennsylvania right now. Penn State Extension has set up an entire website to help track and control this pest. Please visit this site for information on how to report this pest and non-chemical steps recommended:

Further information for homeowners can be found here:

    https://www.agriculture.pa.gov/Plants_Land_Water/PlantIndustry/Entomology/spotted_lanternfly/homeowners/Pages/default.aspx

Some folks are treating trees with dinotefuran, although since these products are not yet labeled for this pest, we cannot be certain as to the efficacy.

    https://www.domyown.com/safari-20sg-systemic-insecticide-with-dinotefuran-p-2512.html

When doing a soil drench with Safari 20SG or any other systemic insecticide, the exact amount of water is not as important as using the correct amount of product. Your water is a carrier for the active ingredient, so you just need to use a sufficient volume of water to mix and apply the insecticide. To treat shrubs, you would use 3 to 6 grams (1.25 - 2.5 level teaspoons) of Safari 20SG per foot of shrub height, using 1-4 pints of water per foot of shrub height or per inch of trunk diameter for trees.

    Q
Can Safari be used for European elm scale and how best to apply to an 80-foot tree?
    A

Safari 20SG insecticide can be applied to treat a variety of soft and armored scale insects, such as European Elm scale, however this application is best done in spring after leaves have expanded. For the crawling stage, it is best to apply a foliar spray of an oil product or a pyrethroid such as Talstar P. This article has more details about the life cycle of this insect.

    Q
Can Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran be used as a basal bark spray to treat Magnolia scale?
My magnolia is infested with scale. I've used imidocloprid twice but read that soft scale don't feed deeply enough for that to work well. Just wondering the best product to save this poor tree from scale.

    Q
Can Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran be used on Tilia x Mongolia Little Linden?
    A

Per the Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran product label: “Do not apply this product, by any application method, to linden, basswood or other Tilia species.” Due to the sensitive nature of Linden trees, we recommend speaking with the master gardener at your local cooperative extension office to determine what products can safely be applied.

  • Asked by Lindsay from Tracy City, Tn

    Q
What is the mix rate to treat hemlock woolly adelgid using Safari 20SG?
What is the mix rate of this product please for a 4 gallon spray container. How many inches from the base of the tree do I spray? How many times do I go around the tree when I do spray? A couple times around per tree? How many times does this need to be completed-yearly?
    A

Per the product label for Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran when using as a basal trunk spray to treat Hemlock Wooly Adelgids:  You use12-24 oz per gallon Depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65-85” of cumulative trunk diameter (1.5-2.0 fl oz per inch of trunk diameter) when applied to trunk between soil surface and 4-5 feet above soil surface.  When sprayed on the trunk, Safari 20 SG Insecticide will be absorbed through the bark and into the vascular system, and then transported throughout the tree. Speed of control will be dependent on tree size, tree health, environmental conditions and how actively pests are feeding. In actively transpiring trees, control may be evident within 1-3 weeks after application. Spray bark on root flare (buttress roots) and on trunk between soil surface and 4-5 feet above the soil surface. Adjust nozzle to uniformly distribute spray over the entire circumference of the tree trunk and buttress roots. Wet bark just to the point of saturation and run off onto soil. Apply ONLY with a low volume sprayer operated at less than 20 PSI to prevent tree damage, bounce back and drift of spray droplets. Time applications to coincide with when most vulnerable pest life stage is present on plants. Do not apply to wet bark, during rainfall or if rain is expected within 12 hours. Control may be less effective in trees with thick bark, and at times when trees are not actively growing or transpiring.

    Q
I have a advanced case of Tulip Tree Scale in my Magnolia Grandiflora in Southern California.
Research on the internet suggested a soil drench with Imidacloprid, basal trunk spray of Safari and a Bifen spray would be most effective. Do you agree and if so would it be okay to do it in January since the climate is mild here in Southern California this time of year? I recently found a Magnolia leave with all stages of Tulip Tree Scale in progress.
    A

Yes, you can use an imidicloprid product such as Dominion 2L insecticide as a soil drench around the root system of the tree while the tree is actively growing. This is typically done in the late winter/ early spring. You would use 0.1 – 0.4 oz of Dominion 2L per inch of trunk diameter at breast height diluted in water in a bucket or watering can and poured around the base of each tree. We generally recommend that you pair a soil drench with a topical spray such as a horticultural oil or a pyrethroid such as Talstar P.  The contact sprays are most effective when applied to the crawlers that have emerged and are active in mid to late summer.  You can also then spray the trunk with Safari.

  • Asked by Sandra from West Chester, Pa

    Q
Can we tap maple trees that were treated with Safari 20SG?
We applied Safari 20sg according to the instructions on several maple trees that had lanternfly population. This was about 4 months ago in late September. Can we now tap those trees for maple sap or would you recommend not?
    A

Since Safari 20SG is not labeled for use on maple trees that are tapped for syrup, we would not recommend this application. Usually you will need to wait at least one year from treatment to harvest edibles that have been treated with a systemic insecticide. We recommend contacting Valent directly at 800-898-2536.

  • Asked by Wayne from Hamburg

    Q
    Use of a penetrant
this is one of the products Penn State Extension spotted lanternfly website recemmonds as a systemic/contact spray. For the bark spray does the solution need a penetrant such as Pentra-Bark to be effective in entering the tree.
    A

Per the product label, you can mix Safari 20SG with a surfactant, but it may not be very helpful for woolly adelgids for example since they are mostly controlled by ingesting the active ingredient rather than by contact: Tank mixing with a surfactant may improve control of pests such as whitefly, mealybug and scale. Confirm plant safety of tank mix in small area before using on a commercial scale.

  • Asked by Mark from Denver
    11/17/2020
    Q
How often to apply Safari 20SG as a drench on potted gardenias to control mealy bugs?
These bushes are indoors for the winter
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran usually only needs to be applied once a year as a soil drench but it can be applied more often if needed as long as you do not go over the max rate per year listed on the product label.  Systemic products applied to the soil usually do not need to be applied more than 1-2 times per year though. Also be sure to bring the plants outside before treating until the soil dries, typically 4-6 hours
