    Q
What mixing instructions for Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran for soil drench on elm for oystershell scale?
    A

You will use 2.1-4.2 ounces of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran per 10 inches of trunk diameter at breast height (DBH) For multi-stem trees, base rate on cumulative inches of diameter of all stems at breast height. Apply in enough water to wet the lower 12” of trunk and surrounding soil surface. Mix required dose in water and uniformly apply to soil around base of shrub or tree. Pull back mulch before drenching. Apply 1-4 pints of drench solution per foot of height (shrubs) or inch of trunk diameter (trees). Adjust drench volume based on soil type, soil moisture and thickness of mulch so that product is moved into root zone. To enhance soil penetration in heavy soils and sloping terrain, dig shallow holes around tree or shrub, and apply drench solution in holes. Lower drench volumes may be less effective in dry soils or when applied over heavy mulch unless there is adequate rainfall or irrigation after application to move product into root zone.

  • Asked by Michael from Monteagle, Tennessee

    Q
I have 7 Hemlock trees with Woolly Adelgids. The DBH ranges from 11 to 23 inches with an average of 17 inches DBH total. How much Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran would I need to treat all 7 trees?
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran is labeled to treat Wooly Adelgids on Hemlock Trees as a soil drench application. Since the trees vary in DBH measurements, it would be best to treat each tree individually to ensure each tree gets the recommended amount of active ingredient to the root zone. Per the product label, use 1.25 tsp to 5 tsp per inch of trunk diameter in a sufficient amount of water to thoroughly and evenly distribute the mixed solution around the base of the tree to the root zone. Apply 1-4 pints of drench solution per foot of height (shrubs) or inch of trunk diameter (trees). Adjust drench volume based on soil type, soil moisture and thickness of mulch so that product is moved into root zone.

For example, a hemlock tree that is 11 inches at DBH, you would use 1-4 pints of mixed solution and apply for a 1ft (12 inch) radius around the base of the tree to the root zone.

    Q
Can Safari be combined with Maxxthor (Bifenthrin) in a single treatment spray?
    A

You could potentially mix Safari 20SG Insecticide with another product such as a bifenthrin insecticide if you are applying it as a foliar spray. However, usually if a systemic product like Safari is used with another product, the Safari would be applied as a soil drench or bark banding treatment. Then you could apply the bifenthrin product as a foliar spray so you are using 2 different treatment methods.

    Q
Will Safari have an effect on reducing ticks while treating for other pests?
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran is not labeled for ticks at all and would not be recommended for control of them.

We would recommend treating the outdoors with something like Cyzmic CS and Archer IGR, the IGR will help to disrupt the life cycle of ticks, in this case. We do recommend re-treating every 30 days throughout the season to ensure a continued residual that will continue to kill ticks that come in contact with the treated surfaces. We also recommend to review our article on How to Get Rid of Ticks for further tips and information.

    Scale on Myrtle Topiaries
Hello! I have some very lovely, hedge topiaries that are infected by mealybugs and hard scale. I have tried EVERY topical treatment and they still persist. I am worried I will have to toss them out
    A
Yes Safari is labeled for hard scale. Another option is Dominion 2L. You can use Dominion 2L insecticide to treat scale on your crepe myrtle trees. You would apply this as a drench around the root system of each tree while the trees are actively growing.

    Q
When applying Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran as drench for Spotted Lanternflies to multiple trees, is this still toxic to bees or only to insects that suck the sap from the tree?
    A

Yes, Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran is highly toxic to bees exposed to residues for more than 38 hours following treatment. Do not apply this product to blooming, pollen-shedding or nectar-producing parts of plants if bees may forage on the plants. Soil drenches would be a less direct affect on bees but could still pose a risk.

  • Asked by Frank from Lahaina, Hawaii
    08/17/2021
    Q
If applying Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran as a soil drench to treat for scale and whiteflies, is the application rate different if treating sago palms vs plumeria?
Is the mixing ratio the same for both types of trees when used as a soil drench? (3-12 gr/in DBH). As a rule of thumb, since I plan on going with 12 grams/inch to get the problems under control, is it probably ok to go with the lower end of the range for water (1-4 pints/in DBH) to save lugging too many 5 gallon buckets around?
    A

When soil drenching using Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran, it is important to use enough water to thoroughly saturate the roots from the trunk out to the end of the tree line. Water is the carrier so using too little amounts of water will not thoroughly disperse the active ingredient like it's intended to do.

Per the Soil Drench Remarks on page 12 of the product label, it is advised to adjust drench volume based on soil type, soil moisture and thickness of mulch so that product is moved into root zone

Does Safari 20SG with Dinotefuran kill slugs?
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran does not include slugs on labeled list of target insect pests.

    Q
What would be the mixing ratio per gallon of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran to do a soil application for manila beetle in a Manila Palm?
    A

The mixing ratio of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide is 1.5 - 2.0 fl. oz. per inch of the trunk diameter. This needs to be mixed in at least 5-10 gallons of water. Remember, the important thing about using this product is that the water is a carrier. The amount of product is what is important.

  • Asked by Chris from Hallsville

    Q
Will Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran kill the fungus gnat larvae in the soil of house plants?
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran is labeled for fungus gnats outdoors but is not labeled for fungus gnats indoors on houseplants. Refer to the section Ornamental Plants – Indoors on page 9 of the product label for a full list of insects Safari can be used on indoors.

The easiest control for them is to allow the soil to dry out completely between the times you are watering them, which may actually be the best thing for the plants anyhow.

Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect Control would be recommended to treat the fungus gnat larvae in the soil and using Talstar P for a foliar spray application. Spray houseplants outdoors and allow to dry before taking them back into the house. View the full product label for each for more information.

  • Asked by Mark from Shingle Springs Ca
    02/15/2022
    Q
Can Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran be used systemically or foliar spray for Pine Oak Bark Beetles in my blue/black oak tree
I live in drought stricken Northern California and have already lost one large oak and I worry about the others that I have on my property.
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide is not labeled to control bark beetles, instead you can use Permethrin SFR 36.8% as a foliar spray to help prevent the infestation of trees and woody ornamentals. Infested trees would need to be pruned and dispose of bark beetle-infested limbs. If the main trunk is extensively attacked by bark beetles, the entire tree or shrub should be removed.

Please review the following article by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources for more information.

    Q
How I do determine how many grams of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran I need for a soil drench application for Pine Needle Scale on a 30ft with 8 inch D.B.H.?
Directions state 3 to 12 grams per inch of trunk DBH. How do we determine if we use 3, 6, or 12 grams?
    A

Per the product label, you should use higher labeled rates of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran for broadleaf evergreens with dense foliage (ex. hollies), on very large trees or if controlling insects on woody plants more than on herbaceous plants.

For Pine Needle Scale, apply at the rate of 3g to 12g (1.25 tsp to 5 tsp) per inch of trunk diameter at D.B.H in 1-4 pints of water per inch of trunk diameter at D.B.H. One (1) level teaspoon contains 2.4 grams, and 1 cup (8 fl oz) contains 4.0 oz by weight
