    Q
How far will a 3 lb jug go on pine scale? Drench or spray.
I am getting a lot of trees with pine scale. When is the optimum time to treat them?
    A
The best time to treat is once in mid-April and then about 10 days later so that you get the crawlers when they hatch, which can occur over 2-4 week period. Once you've knocked the population back, you shouldn't have to retreat it every year. It may take two years, though, to get it under control. The length Safari 20SG will treat all depends on how large the diameter of the trees are. Please refer to the application charts on the product label.

    Q
Treatment for Benjamin and Spiraling Whitefly
Safari 20SG is labeled for whitefly. If it isn't too much trouble, I have 3 questions pertaining to this product as I have both Spiraling and Benjamin whitefly: 1) the spiraling whitefly is so much LARGER than other whitefly varieties, should the dosage be adjusted for a larger bodied insect? 2) looking at the label directions for trees/large hedges on their site (link below), soil drench instructions indicate by grams or ounces but do not indicate the amount of "finished solution" to be applied as they do for containers. Are the directions provided meant as grams/ounces per 100 gallons which would require a finished product equivalent like their potted plants or is this application rate per tree? 3) is it preferable to use trunk diameter or hedge height since hedges are merely shaped trees and could potentially have a larger trunk than would be supported by the height of the hedge? This information would be helpful in determining the amount I will need to purchase. LINK: http://www.valenttrainingmodules.com/safari/index.cfm?page=15 Many thanks in advance for your assistance with this! Please feel free to edit as necessary if you choose to place on the Q&A section of the Safari website. Mark

    Q
I understand that Safari will control bagworms. What's the best application for 30 foot pine trees?
    A

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran can be used for bagworms at the following rates:

Field Grown (In-Ground) Trees (Less than 24” diameter at breast height) 3-12 grams (1.25-5.0 level teaspoons) per inch of trunk diameter at breast height (DBH) 1.05-4.2 ounces per 10 inches of trunk diameter at breast height (DBH) For multi-stem trees, base rate on cumulative inches of diameter of all stems at breast height.

Field Grown (In-Ground) Trees (24” diameter or greater at breast height) 6-12 grams (2.5-5.0 level teaspoons) per inch of trunk diameter at breast height (DBH) 2.1-4.2 ounces per 10 inches of trunk diameter at breast height (DBH) For multi-stem trees, base rate on cumulative inches of diameter of all stems at breast height.

Apply in enough water to wet the lower 12” of trunk and surrounding soil sur- face. Apply in a one foot wide band over base of trunk and soil down cen- ter of hedgerow. To improve performance, rake back mulch before application.

  • Asked by James from Boles, Ar The Tree Is In Ft. Smith Ar.

    Q
Will Safari 20SG kill carpenter worms?
I'm arborist and own a tree service; I've come across a Red Oak that has a number of problems, besides the borers for which I recommended a systemic insecticide {safari or Bayer landscape} , the tree also has misltoe, Hypoxylon canker which are being removed if the damage is to great. However the other day I found a couple carpenterworms in the tree and am concerned that there is a bigger infestation in the tree and was concerned that the systemic insecticides would not affect the carpenterworm.
    A
Safari is not labeled for carpenter worm control and would likely only help provide control of the insects if they are sprayed directly before they bored beneath the bark. Systemic insecticides in general will not work for this pest because they live just beneath the bark. Unfortunately control is usually limited to only mechanical control by probing the tunnels with a wire to kill pupa, larva and eggs and then sealing the holes or destroying heavily infested trees.

  • Asked by Ivy from Aspen, Colorado

    Q
To control spidermites on a tropical plant in a home should I Safari systemic granules or foliar spray?
    A
Safari 20SG cannot be used indoors and it is not labeled for spider-mite control. We are unaware of any systemic product that is labeled for indoor use for spider-mite control. Instead we would recommend a foliage spray product such as Talstar P which is labeled for use on ornamental plants indoors and is also labeled for spider-mites.
