I have found a colony of small carpenter ants under my weed fabric and landscape rock. Do I need to remove that before applying termidor or can I spray over the rocks and weed fabric?AWhen using Termidor SC for ant control, you want to make sure the ants are contacting the treated area. If they are traveling on top of the rock and fabric topical application is fine. If not, you would need to take the material back and then apply and replace.Â

As we were building our house about 3 years ago, the inspector suggested that we add a second perforated tile (there was already a French Drain 7-8ft deeper at the walk-out basement floor height) right next to the foundation just below the surface (4-12") and fill the whole area with white rock. I really don't want to dig all of this up to apply the Termidor. Can I just trench down into the white rock a few inches and apply the Termidor next to the foundation as usual or do I need to get all the way down to the dirt? If the Termidor worked it way into the perf tile, would it still be effective? The construction is 12" filled block on a mono-slab and there is about 8" of block exposed before any wood, so I think I would see any tunnels if termites were in the area.ATermidor SC is made to bind to soil molecules. Although, it is a little different when it is applied to porous surfaces such as rocks. Porous surfaces will actually absorbe the active ingredient meaning that it would only last a few months. Therefore, we would recommend that you remove the rocks and be sure to treat the soil below according to the label instructions. -

I had to cut sheet rock wall to get to open area (open to ground) in slab under shower to repair drain leak. Now I want to treat the open area in slab under the shower for long term protection before I repair sheet rock. Treated area will be resealed behind sheet rock, under shower base and is not accessible unless wall is again cut, which I would prefer not to do for a long time. Also, will there be a noticeable odor from area, even thought sheet rock walls will be sealed and area is under fiberglass shower stall?AYou can treat with Termidor under the shower if you are treating the soil. If you are treating the slab or any wood that is under the shower it should be treated with Boracare. Termidor does not have a strong odor so any odor left after the treatment should be gone pretty quickly.

Termidor needs to be put into the ground give 10 years of protection. You may want to try drilling to get the Termidor into the ground so that it can bind with the soil. Please read our article Barrier and Soil termite treatment.

Is replacing treated dirt to the trench better than replacing it with a drain sleeve filled with treated drain rock ??AIt is more effective to treat the dirt and put dirt back into the trench.

No, it is not recommended to backfill the termite trench with rock or gravel. Termidor SC is made to bind to soil molecules which allows it to last for 10 years whereas Termidor applied to porous surfaces such as roack and/or gravel will only last and remain effective for a few months.

Would filling the trench with rock or gravel allow for future treatments without re-digging the trench as the rock/gravel would remain permeable? Perhaps this would reduce effectiveness of the treatment as it would also allow water to access the treated soil.AThe trench should be filled back with the soil you removed to create it so that it can be treated and create the area termites will go through to contact the Termidor SC. It will last 10 years or more in the soil.

Read Full Answer »Drywood termites are all contained in a piece of wood. They do not go back to the ground like subterranean termites. For Termidor to work on drywood termites, you have to drill directly into the piece of wood the termites are in and inject Termidor into the wood. Termidor does not penetrate into wood, so you have to inject it into the center. It has to touch the termites to work, but the benefit is that it only has to contact a few termites, and then they can pass it on to the rest of the colony. To treat for subterranean termites using Termidor, you will need to trench all around the skirt just like you would around a home's foundation, and then you will need to trench around all of the blocks that are holding the trailer up, just like you would a home's piers in a crawlspace.
