I just purchased the 15 bait station termite kit. When installing the bait stations I used a 3" auger and drilled the holes for the stations. Since the bait stations are 3.5 inches in diameter they fit right in there snug. My question is does the wood in the station have to have contact with the dirt in the side of the hole or will the snug fit be alright and will the termites find a way from the dirt to the wood in the bait stations? Drilling the holes offers a cleaner hole than a post hole digger or shovel IMO..
The wood in the stations does not have to contact the soil. The termites will make their way into the station and to the wood themselves with no problem. Using an auger is definitely the preferred method, its just that typically homeowners do not have an auger and so a shovel or post hole digger seems to work best.
