Trifluralin is a selective, pre-emergent herbicide that must be applied before target weeds sprout. It is one of the most widely used herbicides used for the control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in nut, grain, vegetable and fruit crops.
To be effective, Trifluralin should be worked into the soil within one day of initial application. Once in the soil it puts a stop to root development and inhibits weed germination by interrupting mitosis.
Trifluralin is usually applied as a spray or soil treatment. It has been EPA approved for a huge number of crops including broccoli, onions, leafy greens, cabbage, tomatoes, beans, soybeans, wheat, sugar cane, sugar beet and potatoes. Trifuralin can also be used for cotton, corn, and crops raised for animal feed. Outside of the food realm, Trifuralin protects against ornamentals such as trees, vines, herbaceous plants, and wood shrubs.
Products containing Trifluralin have to carry the word "Caution" or "Warning" depending on the formulation. This chemical is toxic to fish, but not toxic to birds.
