the worms are yellow about 1 1 1/2" and seem to emerge from cocoons that look as if they are made from the soil, I have also noticed black flying insects that look wasp like that emerge from holes in the ground in spring. what can I do to kill them the trees are much too large to spray. this the third year and I'm worried it will eventually kill my trees. I have over 50 trees on my property and they don't seem to be affecting any other type
If there is anything eating your tree than usually a systemic insecticide will take care of it. To apply this though you have to perform a soil drench around the root system of each tree individually. This is the best way to treat and prevent wood boring insects which is probably what you are experiencing on your tree.
