What is the recommended rate to use as a trunk spray? My trees are mature with girth of 60-85". How does the effectiveness of this treatment compare to the Bayer tree and shrub drench using Merit?
While there are many articles online that suggest using Safari as a trunk spray, Safari 20SG is not labeled to be used as a trunk spray for Emerald Ash Borers (EAB). When using Safari 20SG for EAB the manufacturer recommends that you perform a soil drench. According to page 10 of the Safari product label you will need to use 3-12 grams (1.25 - 5.0 level teaspoons) of product per inch of trunk diameter at breast height. We do not carry the Bayer product you indicated in your question but wet we believe the active ingredient in the product is Imidacloprid. Imidacloprid and Dinotefuran (active ingredient in Safari) are both highly recommended when you are trying to control EAB.
