Sandra from Ocala, Florida writes

What month in Spring to Apply?

I live in Florida and want to know what month to apply. The ground has froze and now grass is dead. Should I apply now before grass and weeds grow? I bought this from you last fall.

Answer:

Ike's Sandbur and Crabgrass Preventer should be applied after the ground has thawed from the winter but before the temperature of your soil reaches 55 degrees. You can use a soil thermometer to determine the temperature of your lawn. You will want to measure the temperature of the soil a few inches below ground. If applied after the ground soil is above 55 degrees, the spring application of pre-emergent herbicides will be less effective. Based on this temperature, that means your pre-emergent may be applied as early as the first week of February if you live in the South. Refer to our lawn care schedule guides for more accurate timing of when to apply your pre-emergent spring treatment or consult with your cooperative extension for more specific timing in your area.
