Marc from Lebanon, Pa writes

Will Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench be effective against Lantern Fly nymphs?

Looking to apply to maple to kill lantern fly nymphs. Also wondering how long this stays in the system of the tree and will this harm cicadas in the ground.

Answer:

Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench is not labeled specifically for lantern flies so we cannot recommend it for this use.  There will not be any insecticides specifically labeled for lantern flies as they are an invasive species that appears to have been primarily introduct to PA in the US and not many other areas so far. Normally they are only found in areas of China/Asia and Japan. We found this Penn State article actually that has a whole initiative taking place to try and remove them from the state and people to contact and inform if you have them on your property. It can stay in the tree for up to 1 year and it could harm cicadas if they contact the treated soil long enough to receive a lethal dose.
