Don from Topsham, Me writes

Will Permethrin SFR 36.8% be effective next spring for Browntail moth control?

We live in coastal Maine and have lots of Browntail moth caterpillar webs high up in our oak trees. Is this product recommended for this use?

Answer:

Permethrin SFR 36.8% can be effective against Browntail Moths but direct contact must be made to increase the effectiveness. Pesticides should be applied when caterpillars are small and feeding, usually before the end of May. Control of browntail moth populations in isolated areas may be obtained by clipping the overwintering webs and destroying these webs by either soaking in soapy water or burning them, according to the law ordinances in your county. This control should be undertaken in the winter and very early spring. For more information you can contact your local cooperative extension office.
